There’s actually a deeper lesson here, which is that you see very little in America - certainly not face-to-face out there in real life land - of the kind of cheap xenophobia the left imagines. People may curiously ask where you’re from if you have an accent, but they won’t mock you like Tim Miller, who here revealingly apes what he thinks his fellow citizens do. Americans care about your behavior as a citizen, not your accent. And their increasing worries about mass immigration aren’t cheap shots like this one, or “fears” about hearing an accent on the bus, but deeper concerns about losing the things that have made America great and a draw to people the world over in the first place.

The manliest men I know do not brag about how manly they are. They do not talk about how “effeminate” other men are compared to them. They do not talk down to women. They honour their wives, daughters, and all Christian women. They do not change their mind every 5 minutes to chase the latest fad in Christless conservatism that will attract more weird men to their podcast. They are older men who have a track record of faithful discipleship, marriages, and parenting. They are not young, untested, ambitious, weak boys who want to lose their souls to gain followers on social media. They are manly because they are godly. And believe it or not, some of them do not have beards.

I am deeply grateful to the faculty, staff, and students of @NewSaintAndrews tor the opportunity to speak on these subjects at Disputatio. The perspectives I share are based on both experience and intentional study. As I say in the speech itself, 3500 pages of reading this year alone. And counting. I provide an introductory bibliography in the talk, and can happily recommend much more. On a personal note, I believe this subject is of grave moral and civilizational urgency. This is not academic or abstract. It involves real men, real lives, real churches, and real choices that are before us. As such, I do not believe this will be addressed by the words and actions of men alone. Yes it will take moral courage to speak in strong dissent. But it will also take the movement of the Holy Spirit to inspire that dissent with biblical faithfulness to prevent yet another overcorrection. As men and women we take leaps of faith when we act while trusting in God and being uncertain of the outcome. We act in righteousness without guarantee, because that is what He commands. I am told this is a core part of Christian history, and that the great saints of the past two millennia have done so. No one wishes for that time to be their own. But as a wise man once said, that is not for us to decide. All that we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. May these words inspire my brothers and sisters to act and speak with boldness.
