I convinced our CFO that the office coffee machine was a cybersecurity risk. I did this because he tried to replace it with Folgers. We had a very good bean-to-cup machine in the kitchen. Espresso. Cappuccino. Fresh beans. It was one of the few things keeping IT employed. Then Finance reviewed office expenses. The machine lease cost $1,100 a month. The CFO said this was absurd and ordered Facilities to replace it with two commercial drip brewers. I protested. He said: “Coffee is coffee.” At that moment, diplomacy ended. The machine was internet-connected for remote maintenance. I pulled the network logs. It phoned home to the vendor twice a day. Perfect. I opened a third-party device security review. I explained that removing the managed appliance and replacing it with unmanaged consumer equipment would eliminate centralized maintenance visibility. This was mostly nonsense. Facilities forwarded my review to Security. Security saw the words “internet-connected appliance” and escalated immediately. Within 24 hours, we had a meeting involving IT, Security, Facilities, Legal, Finance, and the coffee vendor. The vendor's sales engineer gave a 40-minute presentation about firmware updates. The CFO looked exhausted. At the end, Security recommended keeping the existing machine under a documented IoT exception. Finance approved the renewal. We kept the cappuccino machine. Last week the CFO used it. He told me the coffee was actually pretty good. I said security often comes with hidden benefits.
