Most people think they’re struggling because they don’t have enough time. What they’re actually doing is switching between five different jobs every day. They have an idea. Then they write. Then they record. Then they edit. Then they design. Then they write a caption. Then they post. Then they reply to comments. Tomorrow, they do it all again. No system. No batching. No handoffs. It answers questions before they’re asked. It demonstrates how you think. It gives people confidence that you understand their problems. It creates familiarity long before a sales conversation begins. Your website still matters. It’s where people confirm what they already believe. But your content is often what creates that belief in the first place. The founder is becoming the homepage. Not because people love founders but people trust people before they trust companies.

For years, businesses invested heavily in websites because that’s where trust was built. Today, trust is increasingly built before someone ever lands on your homepage. Your content becomes your introduction. Your ideas become your credentials. Your consistency becomes your proof. That’s why founder content is becoming one of the most valuable business assets you can build.

Your website is no longer the first impression. You are. Before someone books a call, buys your product, or replies to your email, they usually search your name. They check your LinkedIn. They scroll your Instagram. They watch a YouTube video. They read your posts. Only then do they visit your website. That’s a fundamental shift.

That’s why the strongest offers feel simple. They reduce uncertainty. They reduce effort. They reduce decisions. People don’t just buy outcomes. They buy an easier path to those outcomes.

They’re not just evaluating the price. They’re calculating the effort. “Will I have time for this?” “Will this be complicated?” “What if I get stuck?” “What if I don’t know where to start?” Every extra decision creates another opportunity for someone to leave. Every unnecessary step increases the mental cost of buying.

I hope we understand that Dangote is not Father Christmas. The refinery is selling 4.1 billion “new shares” at ₦525 each, raising about ₦2.15 trillion from investors. You give the company money. You get shares, which means you now own a tiny piece of the business. Dangote gets something too. Before the IPO, a private investment round reduced his ownership of the refinery to around 87%. But that transaction also helped establish a much higher valuation for the company. Guess what happened to his net worth? Forbes estimated his wealth jumped from roughly $31 billion to over $51 billion. He moved from around the 76th richest person in the world to around 36th. He’s basically about $20 billion richer on paper. Dangote still controls more than 80% of the refinery. And once those shares start trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the market continuously puts a visible price on his ownership. If the refinery eventually becomes worth ₦80 trillion, ₦100 trillion or more, you can do the maths on what his stake looks like. But you are taking risk too. The shares you bought at ₦525 can become ₦700. They can also become ₦400. So I’m more interested in what happens after everybody finishes shouting “Dangote IPO.” 6 months. 1 year. 2 years. 5 years. Nigerian listings have followed completely different paths after entering the market. Some exploded, some fell immediately, some fell before eventually becoming huge winners. The real Dangote story starts after listing.

When marketing does its job well, sales conversations become shorter. Objections become fewer. Price becomes easier to defend. Trust already exists before the first call. Sales should spend less time educating and more time confirming fit. If every prospect starts the conversation with, “So… what exactly do you do?”, your sales team isn’t the first place I’d look. I’d look at the marketing. Because good marketing doesn’t just generate leads. It creates informed buyers.

Too many businesses treat marketing and sales as separate functions. Marketing generates leads. Sales closes them. That’s how it looks on an org chart but it’s not how customers experience it. Customers see one journey. Every ad, post, case study, email, landing page, webinar, and sales conversation either builds confidence or creates friction.

One of the clearest signs your marketing isn’t working is when your sales team has to explain everything from scratch. Marketing isn’t supposed to replace sales. It’s supposed to prepare people for it. By the time someone books a call with you, they should already understand: What you do. Who you help. What problem you solve. How your process works. Why you’re different. They shouldn’t arrive confused. They should arrive curious.

The businesses that survive platform changes aren’t the ones with the biggest following, but the ones with the strongest relationship with the people they’ve already reached. Build your audience. But don’t stop there. Own it.

It should move people one step closer to a relationship you control. Maybe they join your newsletter. Maybe they download a resource. Maybe they join your community. Maybe they become a customer. The platform introduces you. Your owned audience builds your business. That’s the difference.

Every business is building an audience. The question is whether you own it. A lot of businesses celebrate having thousands of followers. Or millions of views. Or a viral post. Then one algorithm change happens and their reach is cut in half. Nothing about their business changed. They just realized they were building on rented land. Platforms are incredible for distribution but they’re not a substitute for ownership.
