Thank you. The main reason why it behaves like that is the way how attached projects work. When you open additional projects in "Attached" mode, a set of project-level settings (including the Composer configuration) of the primary project only is being used. Moreover, for the WSL-based projects, you need to configure the WSL PHP CLI Interpreter first and then force IDE to use it for Composer (PHP > Composer > Execution > Remote Interpreter). But returning to the attached projects limitation, you cannot configure Composer in both ways for local and remote setups. So the recommended approach in your case would be to open a WSL project in a separate new window and configure Composer to use a Remote WSL PHP CLI interpreter there. All of that gave us an idea to automagically switch to the 'composer' executable within a WSL instance for native WSL projects, so here is a fresh new feature request ticket: youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-85949… Please feel free to comment and vote. You can also find how to configure Composer in WSL projects there (in a Workaround section).
If you open WSL projects in PhpStorm, just open them directly — that's Native mode, and it's the one we'd recommend as your default 🎯 Here's why we're confident in saying that: jb.gg/wsl-native-mode Already using it? Tell us how it holds up in the replies.

@alex_friederich 2. It could be a plugin that alters IDE appearance and behaviour. Please send me the list of plugins you have (IDE "About" screen, click the "Copy & close" button for full list), I will check if any of them is responsible.

At the moment, this check compares available updates with the configured version constraints. As you have quite strict constraints in your 'composer.json' file, no updates are suggested. However, it could be useful to add a check for outdated packages regardless. Here is a fresh feature request ticket about it: youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WI-85871… It is in the "Collecting Feedback" state, so feel free to leave your comment and vote for it.
It looks like you are using a third party plugin (Inspection Lens?) that renders inspection messages to the editor area, is that right? Basically, the main difference with package.json is that there is no inspection for package version updates in Composer, and the check is done differently. If Gutter Icons are disabled, it is still should be possible to see available updates in an inlay hint. Is it also missing in your case?
What PhpStorm version are you on? We’re unable to reproduce this behavior on 2026.2.1. It would be great if you could open a ticket through Help > Contact Support so we can clarify the details and take a closer look.
