Everyone has access to AI now. It’s no longer an advantage. What’s the new advantage then?

Interviewed another candidate today. I asked him what RAG is. He replied: RAG is a technique that allows an LLM to answer questions using external knowledge instead of relying only on what it learned during training. Then I asked about fine-tuning. He said: Fine-tuning is the process of training a pre-trained language model on your own dataset so that it learns a new behavior, style, or task. Then I asked a follow-up: Since RAG can inject external knowledge and even mimic a user's persona through retrieved context, why do we still need fine-tuning? When would you choose one over the other? What would your answer be?

Today, I was interviewing a candidate for an AI Engineer role. He had built a chatbot that claimed to detect diseases and assist with medical queries. I asked, "Where did you get your dataset from?" The answer was vague and didn't inspire much confidence. So I followed up: "Did your team have anyone from the medical domain? Because building a reliable medical AI without domain expertise is incredibly difficult." He replied, "No, it was kind of vibe-coded." That led me to my final question: "In a medical diagnosis system, which is more dangerous: false positives or true negatives?" What would your answer be?
