The best backend engineer I ever worked with had an unusual habit. Before proposing a solution... he'd ask five questions. Sometimes... the problem disappeared before we wrote a single line of code. That's when I realized: Good engineers don't just solve problems. They verify the problem is real.

I once spent 6 hours debugging Java code. The bug wasn't in Java. It wasn't in Spring Boot. It wasn't in PostgreSQL. It was because two engineers had completely different ideas of what the word "Active" meant. Most production bugs aren't technical. They're communication bugs.

Sometimes I look back at code I wrote years ago. I don't cringe anymore. I smile. That code reminds me how much I've learned since then. Growth is visible in old commits.

Nobody talks about this enough... Backend engineering is basically learning to manage uncertainty. Uncertain requirements. Uncertain networks. Uncertain users. Uncertain production environments. The code is often the easiest part.

What's one engineering opinion you've changed in the last five years? Mine: I used to believe every duplication should be removed. Now I think premature abstraction can be more expensive than a little duplication. What's yours?

Java Myth #5 More design patterns don't automatically mean better software. Sometimes the best pattern is... one less abstraction.

Debugging Diary #5 If I'm debugging for more than 30 minutes... I stop. I grab a notebook. Writing down what I know almost always reveals what I don't.

Coffee with Backend ☕ I used to think experienced engineers typed faster. They don't. They just make fewer decisions they'll regret later.

Backend Thinking #4 Good engineers solve problems. Great engineers make sure the same problem doesn't happen twice. That's the difference between fixing and improving.

Code Review Note #4 I pay attention to one thing during reviews: "Is this code easy to change?" Features come and go. Change is permanent.

Debugging Diary #4 One habit I picked up over the years: Never trust the first error message. It's often the symptom. Keep digging until you find the cause.
