I guess it depends on the illness…. There is one with a denominator of all humans. And in working on each disease with a smaller denominator we learn something about the larger denominator. Same in tech. Rocket cars or F1 cars aren’t for everyone (or really anyone), but the learnings from the frontier teach us in ways that make all cars better over time. If we took more big swings in LS, we wouldn’t really fail more than we already do on average (because we mostly fail already today), but we would learn and grow more quickly across the field. I’d contend in the end, more big swings in LS in the short term will lead to more big wins in the long term. We just have to take them.
There’s a lot of truth embedded in this hilarious comment. Yet, at the end of the day, I think almost everyone would choose better medicines over trick cars (though kudos to @Tesla because that shit is cool)… But our life science ecosystem is less comfortable with big swings for the fences than in tech, which creates a self-perpetuating cycle of risk-resistance. Maybe it is because so many drugs fail… even the conservative bets are risk-on. But therein lies the point - all bets are risky in the old systems, so we need to find new ways to think and systems for discovery, not just new drugs. Kudos to the pioneers out there trying to make the system better.
