I think Popper's view was that observations could not accrue to build a case, due to induction, thus discrediting verificationism. Further, he extended this point to show there were no solid foundations, arguing that knowledge is like an edifice built on conjectures, rather than a construction with a sure footing, built on a logical foundation, and so, disputing foundationalism.

Without a bipartisan or international consensus on how the pandemic most likely happened, little has been done to prevent it happening all over again. If Covid can be considered a "trigger event" to warn the world of worse bio-catastrophes, there hasn't been any meaningful course correction.

Shockingly good article on Australian immigration policy by socialist intellectual Guy Rundle. He says that the Labor government crackdown on European working holiday visas is a joke, that no One Nation voter wants this, that they simply want to stop the decline of the European-Australian share of the population. He says that Labor chose to crackdown on backpackers because they want to be seen as cracking down on migration but can't afford to alienate multicultural lobby groups and non-European migrant communities: ''But it is also to have some target that doesn’t involve them taking on the multicultural peak bodies, vote getters, and actual ‘communities’. Labor’s primary vote remains tied to these groups.'' He mocks the Kos Samaras - Labor Party hack idea that all One Nation voter anger at migration can be deflected towards support for left wing economic populism: ''Labor grandees , even or especially those who pride themselves on some connection to the working class, are simply unwilling or unable to see problems on immigration as being anything other than displaced angst over economic matters.'' He raises the possibility that Labor should more emphasize the rights of citizens over arrivals: ''The Danish and Swedish social democrats have both taken this path, to head off the populist right, and it has worked.'' So far Guy Rundle is the only left wing Australian thinker I have seen who has actually grasped what is motivating One Nation support. Very surprising considering he once wrote an article suggesting that it would possibly be immoral to defend Australia from Chinese invasion because Australia was ''Stolen Land'' etc.

The weekend news around the war is extremely bearish. Now, who knows what actually happens from here. Maybe some of the reporting is wrong. Maybe this turns into a big nothingburger and markets are up tomorrow. Maybe markets are down significantly. Maybe markets completely crash. Nobody really knows, I definitely do not. But that uncertainty, in itself, is one of the strongest arguments for doing tail risk hedging the right way. When you’re a trader, the CIO of a family office, an allocator at a pension fund, or simply an individual investor, you should be able to read news like this and have the mental clarity to say: “Okay. If it happens, it happens. And that’s okay.” Not because you’re indifferent to the outcome, but because you know there is a real backstop in place if everything hits the fan. Your portfolio, your business, your job, or your financial future isn’t suddenly dependent on the hope that a low-probability event doesn’t become reality. That mental clarity and peace has real value. It allows you to make better decisions. It gives you the ability to think opportunistically rather than emotionally. And it gives you greater conviction to remain disciplined in your broader investment process when everyone else is being forced to react. Philosophically, the approach we take at my firm is centered around actively trading volatility with a structural bias toward the tails. Other managers may approach the problem differently, and there will always be debate around implementation and structure. But those are ultimately details around the deeper philosophy. To me, one of the greatest benefits of tail risk hedging’s general philosophy is simple: when the world becomes uncertain, you don’t have to panic. And irrespective of the semantical details that is undeniable. You already planned for uncertainty and made peace with the outcome.

So Ed Sheeran’s concert speech has raised the issue of the proportionality and justifiability of Israel’s response to the atrocities Hamas committed in October 2023. Now, if we set aside the people who think Israel should not have responded at all, what do those who accept the necessity of a response mean when they say it is not proportionate or justified? How many dead Palestinians is a proportionate response? 1200? Double that? Three times? Should Israel stop fighting when some magical upper limit is reached? First, it is important to realise that proportionality in war is typically understood as an act-to-act consideration, not one that judges the overall response in moral terms. But I am assuming that people who talk this way are not using “proportionate” in its technical laws-of-war sense. They probably mean something like: Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis, so killing 70,000 Palestinians is a disproportionate and unjustified response. This kind of thinking simply betrays a misunderstanding of war. War is not won or lost by who kills the most people. War is about imposing your political will on the enemy. You can win a war without killing anyone. So in order to understand a war you have to look beyond the numbers and look at the strategic goals. Since Hamas initiated this phase of the conflict by attacking Israel in October 2023, we should consider what its strategic goals were. Killing Israelis and taking hostages were not the strategic goals. They were the tactics. The strategic goal of Hamas is the destruction of the state of Israel. Set against that, the strategic goal of Israel is to stop Hamas achieving that aim. After October 2023, the Israeli government decided that this could only be achieved by the destruction of Hamas. So how many people is it proportionate and justified to kill to achieve that goal? That is the wrong question. The answer is as many as it takes, as long as you comply with the laws of war. In war you are not judging success by numbers. Success is achieving your war aims.
