51.3 Terabits Per Second — Through a Single Fiber? Scientists in China have demonstrated a remarkable optical communication record: 51.3 terabits of data per second over about 206 km of fiber — without signal regeneration along the route. That’s an enormous amount of information moving across a distance that would normally create major challenges for high-speed networks. The secret is hollow-core fiber. Instead of sending light through solid glass, the light travels through an air-filled center. This can reduce delay, distortion, and unwanted interactions that limit conventional fiber. Researchers also used multiple wavelengths of light at the same time, allowing many separate data channels to travel through the same fiber. Advanced amplification helped keep the signal strong across the long distance. Why does this matter? AI systems, cloud computing, and data centers are constantly moving huge amounts of information. Faster, lower-latency connections could eventually help these systems communicate more efficiently over long distances. 🧬 Russia’s “Universal Cancer Vaccine” Has a Twist Viral posts claim Russia already has a universal cancer vaccine ready to treat patients. That’s misleading. Russia is testing EnteroMix, an experimental treatment using four non-pathogenic viruses to attack cancer cells and stimulate the immune system. But EnteroMix is still in Phase I trials and is not available for general sale. It is also not an mRNA vaccine. Russia is separately developing personalized mRNA cancer vaccines based on individual tumors. Both approaches are still experimental. Their Immune Cells Were Trained to Hunt Brain Tumors What if a patient’s own immune cells could be trained to recognize several targets on a brain tumor? In an early Phase 1 trial, researchers gave 33 children and young adults with difficult-to-treat brain tumors specially trained T cells designed to recognize three tumor-associated proteins: WT1, PRAME and survivin. Most patients did not have long-lasting responses. But three people with recurrent tumors remained free of detectable disease for about 32 to 52 months without additional treatment. One achieved a complete response. It’s an intriguing signal—but not yet proof that the treatment works broadly. ⚛️ A Fundamental Force May Be Stronger Than We Thought What if one of the forces shaping the universe has been slightly underestimated all along? Physicists using a powerful new method called lattice quantum chromodynamics (lattice QCD) calculated the strength of the electroweak force—and found it may be about 1% stronger than previous estimates. That sounds tiny. But in fundamental physics, even a 1% difference can matter. The electroweak force is deeply connected to how particles behave and includes the weak nuclear force, which plays a role in processes such as radioactive decay. Scientists are now testing whether this new calculation can resolve differences between theory and experiments. The mystery is not solved yet. 🌌 A Planet So Strange, It’s Being Stretched Into a Lemon Imagine a planet almost as massive as Jupiter… being pulled so strongly by a dead star that its entire shape is stretched out like a lemon. That is PSR J2322-2650b, a bizarre world studied by the James Webb Space Telescope. It orbits a pulsar just 1 million miles away, completing a year in only 7.8 hours. But the real mystery is above its surface. Its atmosphere is rich in helium and molecular carbon, an unusual combination that scientists have never seen in a planetary atmosphere like this before. Temperatures may range from about 1,200°F to 3,700°F. Scientists think carbon clouds could form in the atmosphere—and deep inside, carbon might even become diamond. How did such a strange world form? 🚨 Scientists may have found a natural molecule that helps protect the retina from damage. A naturally occurring lipid called erucamide drops as retinal cells become damaged. In experimental models, restoring it helped partially preserve retinal structure and function. Instead of repairing dead photoreceptors directly, erucamide appears to activate immune-related cells that support the retina’s blood vessels and nerve tissue. Scientists used nanoparticles to help deliver it into the eye. The research is still experimental, but it raises an exciting possibility: protecting the retina’s environment could help slow vision loss in degenerative eye diseases. ✨

When this protective pathway is bypassed, damaged cells can instead continue expanding and may contribute to melanoma development. So, could grey hair be more than a sign of aging? 👁️ The Stone Serpent That Seems to Blink When It Rains Deep in Thailand’s Phu Langka National Park lies a rock formation that looks remarkably like a giant sleeping serpent. But there’s one detail that makes it truly mysterious—the “eye” seems to come alive when rain begins to fall. As water flows through the natural grooves in the sandstone, the wet, darkened surfaces create a striking contrast that can make the formation look as though a huge eye has suddenly opened. The site, known as Naka Cave, is also connected to Thailand’s ancient Naga traditions. Nagas are mythical serpent beings associated with sacred places and the Mekong region. What looks like a sleeping creature awakening may actually be a beautiful combination of erosion, rock patterns, rainwater and light—but standing in front of it, the illusion can feel almost unreal. 🌈 SOME WOMEN MAY SEE COLORS YOU CAN’T Most people have three types of color-sensing cone cells. But some women may carry genetic variants that allow a fourth type. This condition, called tetrachromacy, could let someone distinguish between shades that look identical to most of us. But having a fourth cone doesn’t guarantee this ability—the brain must actually use its signals. Scientists have found evidence of true tetrachromatic vision in at least one person, but how common it really is remains uncertain. 🚨 QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT JUST REACHED A NEW EXTREME What happens when one of the strangest ideas in quantum physics meets the most powerful particle collider on Earth? Scientists have now observed quantum entanglement between top quarks at the highest energies ever studied. Top quarks are the heaviest known elementary particles—and they disappear almost instantly after being created. Yet, before they decay, their spin can preserve a trace of their quantum connection with their antimatter partners. At the Large Hadron Collider, researchers analyzed enormous numbers of proton collisions and found spin correlations consistent with quantum entanglement between top-quark pairs. Why is this so fascinating? It shows that quantum entanglement survives even in the extreme, high-energy environment of particle collisions—far beyond the familiar world of photons and electrons. And the mystery goes deeper. Studying these unusual quantum connections could give physicists new ways to test the Standard Model and search for signs of unknown particles, new forces, or physics beyond what we currently understand. 🦷 WHAT IF YOUR BODY COULD GROW A NEW TOOTH? It sounds like science fiction—but Japanese researchers are testing a drug that could make it possible. The treatment, TRG035, targets a protein called USAG-1, which acts like a brake on tooth development. By blocking it with an antibody, scientists hope to reactivate the body’s natural tooth-forming process. Animal studies have shown that blocking USAG-1 can encourage the growth of additional teeth. Now, researchers are taking the idea into human clinical development. The early trials have focused mainly on safety, particularly for people born without some permanent teeth. Toregem reported that its Phase I trial was completed in 2026, with further development being prepared. But here’s the mystery: Could the human body really be capable of growing another natural tooth? Researchers still need to prove that the treatment can safely and reliably produce functional teeth in humans.
