I'm no expert, but from my own experience and that of my son, it just happens. I don't remember learning to read. My father read to me, and over time the words he spoke and the words on the page became the same. I watched it happen with my son. I can't say that it works like that for all children, but I'd bet money that it would for most.

@NielsHoven Brandolini's law at work. It takes two seconds to say, "Teaching young children to read is bad," and then I start trying to reason on why it's wrong, which takes many more words. That's my mistake. It's not something serious people debate. I dismiss it.

@RaulJuncoV At the risk of splitting hairs, this isn't exactly-once delivery. It's how we mitigate not being able to ensure exactly-once delivery. Idempotency wouldn't matter if a message was only delivered once.

It's like signs that put words in quotes. "THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING HERE!" Why is it in quotes? > Because it's like we're saying it. So if it's not in quotes, you're not saying it? Are we supposed to ignore the sign because it's something no one is saying?

"I mean" is becoming the worst verbal tic. Unlike "like" and "y'know", people put it in writing. > I mean, it wasn't a bad movie. You don't have to say that you mean it. It's implied. If you don't say "I mean," does that mean you didn't mean it?

@mattfahrner There's a point where we act out of what appears to be self-originated will. It's unexplained. It's why a person writes a song without a prompt. I can't get my head around it, but it's the reason why parrots didn't create a body of knowledge and art by repeating each other.

I'm trying to imagine telling someone, "We're not going to consider you because you brought iced coffee to the interview." It sounds silly. But if that's the reason, don't you have to stand by it and say the words?

@RoaringHammy I've never brought a beverage to an interview. Still, I don't get it. It sounds like the coffee detail is causing people to draw a picture of the guy in their heads, and the real problem is everything else in that picture.

@HariSel57511397 I never thought I'd be grateful to be older (50s) even though that means I will die sooner. In the 90s I went from dishwasher to forklift driver to salesperson to software developer with no college. It was hard at times. I don't know if a path like that still exists.

That role wouldn't make sense where I work, but that hasn't stopped other companies from having the same title. In that other case, I question whether it meant anything at all except Senior Senior Developer. It's like another company where half the developers went from Senior to Application Development Specialist, which meant exactly nothing, and IMO it's questionable whether they should have even been Senior.

@frankdejonge I forget that other places are structured differently because we're different businesses doing completely different things. We have no clients, and no solution architects.
