Fun fact: the Venice Film Festival awarded a gold medal to Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda film "the Triumph of Will" in 1935 and the best film award to her Nazi propaganda film "Olympia" in 1938. Sadly, we don't know for how long they applauded both films.

The prevailing view of so much of the young left in America is that we’re the worst country ever, so if someone attacks us, they can’t be all bad.

Do you think there was even one person in that auditorium in Venice who, somewhere in the back of their mind, said to themselves, Wait a minute: 1) One side is holding 251 hostages, including children, grandparents, and parents. 2) It has just invaded and massacred defenseless civilians in Mongol-style fashion. 3) It has systematically turned one of the most beautiful places in the world into a fortress of hundreds of kilometers of tunnels used exclusively for warfare. 4) Its entire doctrine of warfare is built on erasing the fundamental distinction on which the laws of war rest: the distinction between combatants and non-combatants. In fact, its strategy depends on Israel being the only side bound by the laws of war. 5) It knows that Israel calculates the risk to civilians when planning military strikes, and therefore makes sure to surround itself with a minimum number of non-combatants in order to gain protection and cause Israel to call off attacks. 6) It uses mosques, hospitals, schools, and homes as weapons depots and centers of military activity. 7) There is a country, Egypt, with a border that refuses to allow people to leave the war zone. Yet instead of all the world's "humanitarians" pressuring Egypt to accept refugees fleeing a war zone, they call this "ethnic cleansing" and insist that people who are not combatants and do not want to be in a war zone must remain there, despite wanting to flee. And on the other side, Israel: a) Invests billions in obtaining intelligence that allows it to calculate, for each military target, how many non-combatants are likely to be killed if it is attacked. b) Changed its calculations after the massacre regarding how many non-combatants may be put at risk or killed while still falling within the range of collateral damage permitted under the laws of war. c) Following the massacre, decided to expand its definition of military targets to include, for example, an active Hamas member who is officially listed as "only" a police officer carrying a weapon. d) Has lawyers who, for every strike, deliberate over whether the expected harm constitutes permissible collateral damage and whether the attack is justified under international law. And isn't all of this rather strange behavior, and an extraordinary investment in intelligence and lawyers, for a country supposedly intent on carrying out the "indiscriminate killing of civilians/genocide"? Do you think there was even one such person in the auditorium? (In another post, I'll address the phenomenon of Jews giving their enemies pound after pound of flesh.)

The first victim of 9/11 was Danny Lewin. Born in Denver, raised in Jerusalem. Captain in Sayeret Matkal. Mathematician. Co-founder of Akamai - the company that still carries a huge share of the internet. On the morning of September 11, 2001 he boarded American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles and sat in seat 9B. Directly in front of him: Mohamed Atta and Abdulaziz al-Omari. Directly behind him: Satam al-Suqami. When the hijackers rose and moved toward the cockpit, Lewin - 31 years old, elite IDF officer - stood up to stop them. Al-Suqami slit his throat from behind. Flight attendants Betty Ong and Amy Sweeney radioed that a passenger in 9B had been stabbed and appeared dead. The 9/11 Commission later concluded he was almost certainly the first person murdered that day. Twenty-five minutes later Flight 11 hit the North Tower. He left a wife and two young sons. Israel is the only country outside the United States with a 9/11 memorial that lists every victim by name, built from Ground Zero steel. Danny Lewin’s name is on it. In the last few months, my life has changed beyond all compare. I made a decision to support my Jewish friends and without hesitation. I feel anxious almost everywhere I go but I do not regret my decision. I have seen friends that I have helped and supported turn on me without a conversation. It hurts because I know that not only do they know Jewish people but they have benefited hugely from the association with Jews. British Jews have always made London better from Philip Sallon's crazy nightclubs to the brick lane Bagel shop. More importantly and most shocking is that many of these anti Isreal people have zero political instincts. They only care because it has become fashionable to care. I would go as far to say that they are the biggest and most hideous cowardly fakes to walk this earth. Why are people who support their Jewish friends being called to account while these fakes, like Ed Sheeran, Jade and countless others get to pretend to care about a situation they could not comprehend even if they really tried. I support anyone calling for peace. That is what we should all be doing. How can Isreal be an apartheid state when Arabs and Christians live there peacefully and are part of the political system? As for Ed Miliband, clearly we know why he never because Prime Minister and Andy Burnham won't be getting my vote. Forget Israel for a moment. 9/11 is one of the most investigated terrorist attacks in history. Al-Qaeda planned it. Bin Laden approved it. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed designed the planes operation. The hijackers were identified. The financing was traced. Al-Qaeda leaders themselves acknowledged responsibility. And even allowing for the obvious selection bias in this audience, somehow 62% landed on Israel. That should bother you even if you despise Israel, because if an information bubble can convince this many people of something this demonstrably false, I have a question: What else do you believe about Jews or Israel that you’ve never actually checked? Pick one thing you’re absolutely certain about, then go find the original source.

We arrived early, I spent $180 on two sweatshirts for them, watched the first two opening acts and were having a great time. Then Macklemore decided to turn your concert into his political rally. When he started chanting “Free Palestine” and pushing his clearly uneducated version of the Israel/Gaza conflict, my daughters looked at me completely confused. I had brought them to an Ed Sheeran concert, not to have an opening act lecture them about Middle East politics. After Friday night, I started looking into Macklemore’s history. What I found, including his repeated use of antisemitic tropes, made the whole thing even worse. So I took my family and walked inside alongside hundreds of your other fans. As we were walking in, even the MetLife security guards were rolling their eyes at what was happening on stage. We waited until Macklemore was finished before returning to our seats. Then we watched your show, which was phenomenal. I left Friday hoping maybe this had caught you and your team off guard. Then tonight you allowed it to happen again. You knew exactly what Macklemore had done the night before, and you gave him the stage again. Friday might have been Macklemore’s decision. Saturday was yours. You have a lot of Jewish fans who love your music, buy your albums and merchandise, and bring their kids to your concerts. Tonight, you lost four of them. I was a medical student in London when 9/11 happened I went into class the next day assuming everyone would be devastated by it like I was To my surprise I found a significant number of students were actually excited and energised by it. I haven't got over that, 25 years on.

“So do not dare propose that ‘Israel Never Truly Wanted Peace with Palestine’. If anything, we wanted it too much. So now, it is your turn to answer the question: When did you ever truly want peace with the one Jewish state?” (my 10 min speech with English captions from the Oxford Union Debate):

Anti-Zionism is ethically repugnant regardless of its attitude towards Jews. Why? Because it contemplates the physical destruction of a unique culture (with its own unique language, among other things) that flourishes nowhere else in the world and could not resurface elsewhere. This is precisely what makes it a genocidal dream. The same would be true even if Israel were not a uniquely Hebrew state but a uniquely Yazidi or Armenian state. To hate a cultural community and dream of eliminating it is about as Nazi as one can possibly get.
