Startups should mostly be fun. Yes, they’re hard. But life is too short to build companies with assholes, liars, racists, sexists or people who can’t take feedback or have hard conversations.

All in all, u can have real distribution and quiet engagement. Exists in so many use cases from Plaid to your YKK zipper on ur jeans. Engagement can deffo feed distribution on social platforms but that’s it. Treating the two as interchangeable is how a lot end up with no $ and a lot of likes hahaha

3/ The inability to differentiate between content distribution and product distribution. A viral post distributes the take but does not automatically distribute the product. Also, short bursts in virality doesn’t mean you’ve become a somebody overnight. Just gets you 1 step closer to the end goal. Should be common sense but once again it doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’m beginning to get tired of the term “distribution” and it seems like a lot of people especially startup founders not understand what it actually means imho What annoys me more has probably got to do with the misframing of the term itself…especially conflating between this and the term “engagement”. 3 main reasons why this happens from what I’ve seen ⬇️

This is the perf analogy bro. I always like to use Arsenal as a classic case study of this as a parallel concept. Under Wenger, especially after their ‘invincibles’ era they didn’t win a single league title while playing some of the best football in the country. Fair to say XG/playing the best football didn’t bring them the silverware they thought they’d deserve. Now under Arteta (their current manager), they don’t quite play the most attractive brand of football but they sure are pragmatic and focused on being effective. Only took them 20+ years to realise this but it sure has yielded them success. I think in parallel concept it’s the same with our careers overall. Like I see so many ppl around our age milking the short and brand focused stints they’ve had but in the long term are they really that good at their work or just fixated on producing an execessive amt of XG before they reach burnout. I feel like not many value the art of learning from scratch maybe like most of us 2-3 decades ago

Currently enjoying my stay in Bangkok having eaten some of the best pork man has produced 🤤. I’ve also been paying attention to how merchants transact at these eateries. At places like Pier 21, you hv to load a prepaid card before buying a 40 baht meal. Seems primitive but it is actually a pretty efficient closed loop system. On a tiny transaction these card payments are deffo not automatically worth it. Fees, reconciliation and settlement overhead matter when margins are thin. The mall takes payment once, settles with each stall internally and keeps the queues moving. In contrast to where i come from, SG hawkers use a mix of cash, PayNow, SGQR, NETS and cards, but cash only stalls still exist. i think it’s fair to say the real challenge is not simply making hawkers accept cards. It’s enabling one customer to buy from multiple stalls while keeping settlement cheap and simple. If your product still takes 2% on a plate of pad krapow, you may not be replacing the house card. You may just be adding another cost layer to the system it was designed to avoid. A product that could win will probably be the one that preserves the food court’s economics while making payment easier for customers and vendors.
