The Thanjavur Rajarajeswaram (Brihadeeswara) Temple too suffered multiple attacks from invaders. The entire Vimana was gold plated and it was looted during Malik Kafurs invasion. In 1758, during the reign of Raja Pratap Singh, Thanjavur came under assault from French troops led by Captain Lally. Several parts of the temple were damaged during this attack. In 1771, British forces attacked Thanjavur, causing damage to the northern and western sections of the temple. Between 1773 and 1776, the British occupied the temple, converting it into a fortress. Soldiers used the temple premises for target practice, and bullet holes can still be seen on the walls. The sanctum itself was occupied. Later, Maratha King Serfoji II assumed power. The British, however, sought the right to collect taxes from him. Serfoji agreed to cede this authority on one condition — they must vacate the main temple. Once the temple was restored to royal control, Serfoji undertook extensive renovation works, repairing damaged sections and constructing a brick platform. He also installed 108 Shivalingas within the premises. On 29 May 1802, Serfoji borrowed 5,000 varahans from one Harrington to fund the daily poojas and rituals of the temple. Rajarajeswaram stands tall today, a living monument preserved through the selfless efforts and sacrifices of such devoted rulers.

The Thanjavur Maratha king Raja Serfoji II, whose birth anniversary is celebrated today, was a multi-faceted personality. I had earlier written about his immense contribution to the restoration and renovation of the Thanjavur Rajarajeswaram Temple. Here is another fascinating aspect of his life. The Modi records preserved in the Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur reveal his deep interest in medicine, particularly Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani systems. He established the Dhanvantari Mahal, where medicines based on Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani traditions were prepared. He also maintained herbal gardens. Several works dealing with diseases and their treatment were compiled during his period, an important one being the “Sarabhendra Vaidhya Muraigal,” which deals with various ailments and their treatment. His interest in ophthalmology is particularly fascinating. Documentary evidence survives showing the treatment of cataract, corneal ulcers, eye infections and other ophthalmic conditions. Cataract operations were also performed. What is remarkable is the integration of Indian and European systems of medicine. The records mention treatments such as castor oil, rhubarb powder, an indigenous “blue pill” and leech therapy, while European medicines included silver nitrate, belladonna solution and other preparations. The records were remarkably systematic: diagnosis, medicines administered, surgical procedures and even the patient’s post-treatment vision were carefully documented. The contributions of Maharaja Serfoji II constitute an extraordinary chapter in the medical history of India.

This is exactly what I have been saying for a long time. The Keeladi report is not backed by scientifically established evidence. If it is published merely to support a political ideology, the credibility of the ASI itself will come into question.

1) A normal Abhishekam has nothing to do with Kumbhabhisham ritual which I guess was the core of the discussion 2) The agama rituals are far more than the Abhishekam which is just one of some hundreds of rituals in the temple That is why it it’s important to get the context clearly.

எழுதியது தினமணியிலா என்பது போன்ற ஒரு அபத்தமான விஷயத்தைப் பார்த்து அதை கேட்டும் இருந்தேன். இப்போது மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை அதைக் கேட்கவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. அப்படி ஒரு அபத்தமான கட்டுரை இது. முதலில் 'ரிக்' (ருக்கு இல்லை) வேதத்தின் காலம் 1500 பொயுமு என்ற தவறான தகவலோடு ஆரம்பிக்கிறார் கட்டுரையாசிரியர். இந்தக் கதையைப் பரப்பிய மாக்ஸ்முல்லராலே அது மறுக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது என்பதை அவர் படிக்கவில்லை போல. அடுத்ததாக ரிக் வேதத்தில் தமிழ்ச் சொற்கள் இருக்கிறது என்பதற்கு இன்னொரு மேலை நாட்டு 'ஆராய்ச்சியாளரைக்' கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வருகிறார். இந்தக் கதையை எல்லாம் எந்த மொழியியலாளரும் ஏற்பதில்லை என்பதை யோசிக்காமல். அடுத்து தமிழ் அறமும் வடமொழி தர்மமும் வேறு என்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். வர்ணாசிரம தர்மம் தமிழில் கிடையாதாம். தொல்காப்பியம் மிகத்தெளிவாக வர்ணாசிரம தர்மத்தை வகுக்கிறது (மேலோர் மூவர்க்கும் புணர்த்த கரணம் கீழோர்க் காகிய காலமும் உண்டே) . "வேற்றுமை தெரிந்த நாற்பாலுள்ளும் கீழ்ப்பால் ஒருவன் கற்பின்" என்கிறது புறநானூறு. திருக்குறளிலும் வர்ணாசிரமம் பதிவுசெய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் இயல்புடைய மூவர்க்கும் நல்லாற்றின் நின்ற துணை என்று இல்லறவாழ்வில் இருப்பவன் மற்ற மூன்று வர்ணத்தவர்க்கும் துணை நிற்கவேண்டும் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். மற்றபடி பிறப்பொக்கும் என்பதற்கு இவர்கள் சொல்லும் விளக்கமே தவறு என்பதும் கட்டுரையாசிரியருக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. வடநாட்டில் அறப்போர் செய்யவில்லையாம் தமிழ் நாட்டுப் போர்கள் எல்லாவற்றிலும் அறப்போர்தான் இருந்ததாம். விளைச்சல் நிலமான மருதநிலத்தை அடியோடு அழித்துத்தான் வெண்ணிப்போர் நடந்தது என்பதைப் பட்டினப்பாலை எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறது. கொழுங் கால் புதவமொடுசெருந்திநீடி, செறுவும்வாவியும், மயங்கி, நீர் அற்று சிறுவனான நெடுஞ்செழியனை எதிர்த்து மற்ற இரு வேந்தர்களும் ஐந்து வேளிர்களும் படையெடுத்து வந்தது எந்த மாதிரியான அறம்? கரிகாலனை சிறுவயதாக இருந்தபோது உயிரோடு கொளுத்த முயன்றது எந்த மாதிரி அறமோ? எல்லா இடத்திலும் நல்லவர்களும் தீயவர்களும் உண்டு. ஆகவே ஏதோ இங்கு மட்டும்தான் அறப்போர் நடந்தது என்று சொல்வது புரிதல் இல்லாத வேலை. இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளாக தமிழத்தின் பெருவேந்தர்கள் இரு கண்களாகப் போற்றி வந்த தமிழையும் சமஸ்கிருதத்தையும் இல்லாத காரணங்கள் சொல்லி பிரிக்க முயல்வது அபத்தம். இதற்கு எதிர்வினை எழுதிய மாலன் அவர்களின் 'மொழி வன்மம்' என்ற தலைப்பு மிகப் பொருத்தம்.
