Building Cloudless - A zero knowledge backup engine using your own cloud storage and keys.

Cloud backup is useful but restore speed matters when you have a large photos, videos or project archives. Use cloud storage as the offsite layer. Keep a local copy for fast restore. Encrypt before upload if privacy matters. Then test restoring a small folder before you trust the whole setup.

Cloud storage is useful but it should not be your whole photo backup plan. For large RAW photo libraries, keep a fast local restore copy, add a separate copy if you can and use cloud storage as the offsite layer. If privacy matters, encrypt before upload.

Google Drive and MS OneDrive are good storage providers and claims to encrypt the files at rest.
Who holds the encryption keys and who all can see and access your files?

Google Drive can be useful backup storage but it should not receive readable copies of sensitive files. The privacy boundary depends on whether encryption happens before upload, who holds the keys and whether restore has actually been tested.

Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and iCloud are useful.
But for sensitive backups, the question is not only “where is the file stored?”
It is: who can read it later if the account, workflow, or device is accessed?
Encrypt before upload when privacy matters.
CloudLess storage target list is expanding:
S3-compatible storage
Google Drive
OneDrive
SFTP
The model stays the same - files are encrypted locally before upload. Storage is just the destination, not the source of truth.
@Shankargan83585@PTTVOnlineNews@ThanthiTV Device or disk theft turns backup into a privacy problem too. You need recoverability but you also do not want the backup destination to become another readable copy of sensitive files. For that case I would look for client-side encryption before upload plus tested restore.
@Joshuwa@StorXNetwork Exactly. Sync keeps files available, backup gives you a recovery path. The dangerous case is a delete, corrupt file or ransomware-encrypted file syncing everywhere. That is when versions, deleted-file retention and a tested restore path matter.
Malware prevention is only half the plan. If files are encrypted, deleted or overwritten, recovery needs a clean point in time. For important folders, I would want versions, deleted-file retention, separate storage, and a restore test.
Tauri has been a good fit for CloudLess because I want a real desktop app without shipping a huge stack. Backup needs local file access, background work, status, and restore browsing. A website alone is not enough for that workflow.

“Encrypted in the cloud” and “encrypted before upload” are not the same thing. Client-side encryption means your device encrypts files before storage ever sees them. The tradeoff is real: privacy improves, but key responsibility moves to the user.
#backup#cloudstorage#privacy#dataprotection
One reason I picked Rust for CloudLess: backup software spends a lot of time touching user files, paths, encryption, and long-running background work. I want boring correctness there. The UI can be friendly, but the file pipeline needs to be strict.
#rust#backup#security#privacy
A backup app should not stop at “completed”. The better question is: can I restore one deleted file, one older version, and one folder on a different machine without confusion? Restore UX matters most when the user is already stressed.
Sync is designed to copy state across devices. Good state, bad state, deleted files, corrupted files. Backup needs a different job: preserve recovery points outside the normal sync path. This is the distinction I keep building around in CloudLess.
One thing I keep noticing while building a backup app:
People trust sync because it feels like backup.
But sync is designed to copy state.
Good state, bad state, deleted files, corrupted files, ransomware-damaged files.
Backup should preserve recovery points outside that normal sync path.
If you delete a file, overwrite a document, hit a sync conflict or malware damages local files, those changes can sync everywhere.
Sync is for access.
Backup is for recovery.
