@QuantumTumbler The “body” ,through the brainstem and thalamus, turns on awareness(what I assume you mean is conscious) . So, I guess if you were to simulate body afferents signals into the thalamus you might have a shot.

“The mechanisms of associative memory formation, including which cells encode a memory and the timing of their engagement, remain poorly understood” In my view, that’s because the hippocampus/EC system is more of a contextual relevancy system. The “memory” facilitation happens during rest or sleep, so don’t expect to find it during wake/fear episodes.

@umbertoleon Low rate firing in a regular pattern sounds like inhibitory oscillation patterns. In other words, those circuits and routes are rendered ineffectual while firing in that manner. The “spontaneous” firing patterns are the interesting ones.

@amytam01 Nice article! As you said, we assume that we have “our taste” as some kind of static value. But if you think of a different time of the day, month or year, it is easy to see fluctuations. Maybe fluctuations around some type of mean?

Starts out as a great cautionary piece, with some serious over reach like “Your brain can’t tell the difference between your emotions and absorbed emotions.” Ends by suggesting lived experience is somehow a bad thing and you need to escape it all. Some great insights, but overall I’m not a fan.
