I've stood on Tractor Supply, PetSmart, Amazon, USPS and Hilton roofs. Here are 12 things a satellite image will never tell you about a solar job: 1. Main panel bus rating 2. Whether there's an open breaker slot 3. How many layers of shingles are up there 4. Plank decking vs. OSB 5. Rafter size and spacing 6. Rot in the attic 7. Where the meter actually is 8. Whether the conduit run is 20 ft or 120 ft 9. The new HVAC unit that isn't in the 2-year-old imagery 10. How tall that oak got 11. If the "flat" roof ponds water 12. How many beers the roofers drank when they built it Every one of these has killed a project or blown a budget for somebody. Desktop design is great for the first 80%. The last 20% is where change orders live.
I built Solar Survey AI's reports to admit when they might be wrong. Every number ships with two things attached: → where it came from → how far off it could be Last week, two of our engines analyzed the same commercial roof. Both have been tested against hundreds of thousands of solar sites. They came back 15.8 points apart on solar access. Their combined margin of error was ±5.8. That's not a rounding difference. That's two engines telling two different stories. So the report said exactly that: these disagree, check the geometry before you trust either one. Most software would quietly average them and hand you one confident number. I'd rather tell you I'm not sure than be sure and wrong. I've learned that telling you our margin of error isn't a disclaimer. It's part of the data.
This weekend I made a leaderboard for our technicians. Building it was easy. Deciding what to rank was the hard part. Here's what I landed on: → 5 numbers: jobs completed, on-time arrival, on-time upload, QA pass rate, and time from survey to upload. → On-time means a verified check-in on site. Not "I was there, trust me." → A rate doesn't count until you've done enough jobs. One perfect job doesn't put you at #1. → You see the top 3 and your own rank. Nobody sees who's last. → Your gap shows as a number, like "2 jobs behind #4." Never a name. → Teammates show up as first name, last initial, and home city. Field work is invisible. A tech can crawl a full attic, shoot every rafter, nail the panel label, and the only person who ever sees it is QA. Now the people who do it right get seen.

89% of companies now use AI. Construction? 27%. & I get why. This sector is built from people who have been there, done that. The veterans. So when I tell them there's a better way, they shake their head & dismiss me. Fair. I'd dismiss me too. I've been innovating in construction for almost 8 years. I've sold to companies as small as your local roofing company, & as big as nationwide Fortune 500s. The objection is identical at every scale: "What we do now works." & I won't argue. It does work. But working & getting ahead aren't the same thing. That 27% isn't a stat about laggards. It's one in four of your competitors, already moving. So I stopped trying to prove anyone was doing it wrong. I started asking what would put them in front.
