6 years of @teamhexcode today.
I'll thank the team, I always do. But the people I actually think about on this date are the founders who hired us when there was no reason to.
No case studies. No real portfolio. A site we'd just put together.
100+ clients later, nearly all of them arrived the same way. Someone we'd worked with vouched for us.
It's a strange thing to build a company on. It means the whole business runs on other people's goodwill, and the only way to protect it is to not waste any.
Our standard has climbed a lot because of that. Work I was proud of in year one wouldn't get past our own review today. When a client comes from a referral, someone else has put their name on us, and you can't afford to make them look wrong.
Thank you to everyone who has passed our name along. Year 7 we're going to try and earn some of that from strangers too.
Every founder's design journey, in order:
Canva / AI
Figma template, uncustomized
Cofounder's friend, who has a full-time job
Upwork guy (great first draft, then silence)
v0 (everything looks like everything)
Demo day in 4 days

Portless help businesses move inventory from months to days. We brought that same speed to their digital presence.
The result? A sharper, more confident digital presence built around what they actually do.

A referral is great.
But when that same person comes back months later with another project, that hits different.
Chris was introduced to us for the Portless website. We had a call, he liked our work, but the timeline was a couple of quarters out.
So we waited.
In the meantime, he introduced us to another company. We worked with them, shipped the project, and they loved it.
A few months later, Chris came back.
“Let’s do Portless.”
And we did.
Designed, developed and shipped in just 12 week.
Good work gets you the project.
Good work + trust gets you the next one.
Big credit to the @teamhexcode for making both projects happen.

Boring studio truth: the work that generates referrals is almost never the work you invoiced for.
Client told us last month that we care about their website more than they do.
He was talking about the buttons. We'd dropped his logo mark into the button states and made it animate. Nobody asked for it, it wasn't in the deck, it took an afternoon we didn't bill.
Then he found it on his own at 10pm and slacked us about it.
That's the whole business model.
100+ clients in 6 years, nearly all of them referrals. this is why.
So we ran the @teamhexcode for five years without posting anything. 100+ clients, all referrals. Someone tells someone, they show up, we do the work.
Then we started posting on @LinkedIn and for six months nothing happened. Nothing. Some views, a few likes from my own team, which honestly felt worse than silence.
And I remember thinking, ok, at what point do I get to say this isn't working. Because there's no signal telling you. It just looks like a channel that's never going to work, right up until it does.
Month six it started moving. It's a real chunk of our inbound now.
The thing about consistency is it only looks like consistency later. In the moment it just feels like you're bad at reading the room.
We're on @dribbble, @contra and @X too. Few months in, nothing yet.
Maybe it turns. Or maybe founders don't hang out there and I'm just making work for other designers to scroll past on their lunch break.
Both feel true. Still posting.
We have an internal rule.
If the customer's reply comes back with normal punctuation, we didn't push hard enough.
Three exclamation marks means we got close.
All caps means we're done.
freebean.co is live. Go poke around, there's a surprise in there.
We shipped Pinpoint's site earlier this year. Went back into it a few weeks ago and turns out, adding to your own work is harder than starting from nothing.
The old site wasn't broken. They've shipped a lot of features and wanted to reposition themselves.
So we made room. Restructured the IA so the new capabilities got their own space instead of being crammed into a section. Added the people using the product, because for something that talks to your customers even while you're asleep, seeing who already trusts it does more than anything we could write.
Then revamped the visuals. Turns out you can't add three sections to a balanced page and expect it to still be balanced.
Design and @framer in 4 weeks. Second version of the same site for the same company, which is the part i'm happiest about.
