When you talk to another TI you recognize the suffering, the torture techniques. However TI's are for the most part still the only people who believe this is real. What you have is a cocktail of people who are under tremendous psychological pressure, who are being outcasted by disbelieve and who still want answers. This results in a sociological effect where many TI's are all to eager to adopt an explanation that sounds plausible accepting it as truth and even defending it fiercely at times when someone dares to be critical of it or disagree. There's not much mental room for rational methododical thinking and the way out is an almost religious believe in an explanation that only has to sound right. In sociology the closest match to this is: "seizing and freezing" under a high need for cognitive closure (Arie Kruglanski). When people are under stress, time pressure, or prolonged uncertainty, their need for closure spikes. They seize on the first explanation that feels coherent, then freeze on it: further information is discounted, and challenges to the belief are treated as threats rather than data. That's the "only has to sound right" part, and the fierce defence against criticism. #targetedindividuals

Knowledge Base Document: Attack-Field-Manual.pdf ➡️ I got tired of security checklists. Not because they're wrong. Because they stop exactly where the work starts. They'll tell you SSRF is a risk. They won't tell you which line in your codebase to look at. ➡️ Every application I ship has to be reviewed against something, so over time I built my own reference. It ended up at 282 entries across 17 categories, and I've turned it into a proper document. ➡️ The thing that makes it different is one question asked of every single entry: how would I know if we have this? ➡️ Not "be careful about deserialization" — the actual sinks to grep for, the traffic signature, the two-account test that either produces a finding or clears it. ➡️ A few decisions I'd defend: 🔲Evidence over tradition. Entries had to appear in more than one independent source. Prevalence claims that couldn't be attributed were dropped. 🔲Defences are ordered, not listed. The control that eliminates the bug class comes first. Mitigations that merely reduce it come after, labelled as such. 🔲Low-relevance entries were kept. A .NET deserialization chain isn't my problem, but the shape of the bug is, and the equivalent Python sinks are named. 💡The Attack Field Manual, 262 pages, free PDF below.
