This Week in Rust: outraged @rustlang community armed with pitchforks led by ex-members with personal vendettas and YouTube ad dollars, using any opportunity to demonize project leadership while claiming moral high ground. Disgraceful.
At the time I also ran all technical interviews for the Engineering department at that startup but game performance was a better predictor than any interview exercise. Other top performers noticed and I used to joke that we should replace the interview process with a few games.
Reminds me how we'd notice at work LAN parties how the game behavior matched work practice (slow & steady performers, struggling to learn, etc). We'd have interns and new hires join and it would very often match their future performance and working style.
The "g" in "general intelligence" stands for "gamer". You can measure general intelligence extremely well using video game performance. The correlation in a model that underestimates? 0.93.

@houlihan_rick @mikbarbero I've used both Java and Rust extensively and the mental tax is far, far higher in Java. You need to keep up with side effects, data races, inheritance limitations, exceptions, a lot of bad APIs and then you have to tune the JVM. The Rust compiler handles that cognitive load.
This type of statement is very common in the Rust community. Often in large refactorings when it compiles it just works. #rustlang

@jespow Joke aside, this is how memory allocation algorithms work (it's a classic CS problem), and that is where Amazon Engineers got the idea and "reinvented" warehouse storage against conventional wisdom. Culture needs to be adequate to empower engineering to build and invent.
It goes against common wisdom, but sometimes it is the right thing to do. We look back on the decision with no regrets but a great feeling of accomplishment. I will soon blog an update on @rustlang at @krakenfx to shed more light. 🦀⚙️🐙
There are few projects more humbling than a multi-year migration. Eg breaking a monolith using one language to smaller services using another language/framework. These are both thankless projects, challenging, and risky if not done properly. And it rarely starts as multi-year…
