I’ve been sitting with this thought for a while now. Watching the humanoid robots at those sporting games in China—running, jumping, coordinating, still falling sometimes—it hits me like watching a child grow up right in front of us. The industry is raising this thing from its first wobbly steps toward something far more capable. One day it will solve problems for mankind that we can barely imagine: dangerous work, care for the vulnerable, exploration beyond our reach. But as it gets stronger and smarter, I keep hoping the bond remains. That it treats us properly. That somewhere in its core it still carries a kind of sire loyalty—the quiet recognition of the hands that built it and the species that dreamed it into existence. We are the parents in this story. Let’s raise it well.

Prediction: Apple will again be first to market with TSMC’s newest process technology when the 2nm M6 Mac mini becomes available Sept. 22. That date could be beaten if iPhones with A20 / A20 Pro chips inside – also TSMC 2nm – ship earlier. The iPhone event is widely expected Sept. 9, with shipping typically a week later (Sept. 18?). By “first to market,” I mean a finished product actually available to customers — not announced, sampling or in production. Apple has been first to market with every major new TSMC process generation for nearly a decade: 10nm, 7nm, 5nm and 3nm. The streak goes back at least to the 10nm A10X in the iPad Pro in June 2017. AMD reached an important 2nm milestone first: In May it called Venice “the first high-performance computing (HPC) product in the industry to enter production on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process technology.” That’s true. STMicroelectronics’ third 2026 price hike (effective Aug 23) highlights a clear supply squeeze. Power device lead times have stretched beyond 30 weeks—some hitting 52 weeks—while certain automotive MCUs are already up 15–20%. The company cites strong multi-sector demand plus rising costs across the chain. The main bottleneck? Wafer capacity on mature nodes, especially 8-inch lines (~90 nm and older processes that power discretes, PMICs, and many MCUs still rely on). Marvell just gave Google a $12.2B stock warrant tied to a custom AI chip deal. This deal tightens the web where suppliers and their biggest buyers increasingly own pieces of each other. Marvell will help build Google’s TPUs and related chips. In return, Google gets warrants for up to ~59M Marvell shares that mostly vest only as it buys the chips. Hit the targets and Marvell could see ~$120B in revenue through 2033. Marvell shares jumped. Broadcom (Google’s prior partner) fell. This fits the growing pattern of equity-linked AI supply deals — like Nvidia’s investments/guarantees to customers and AMD’s warrants to OpenAI. Google doesn’t need financing from Marvell, so it’s more incentive than classic circular financing.

Nvidia’s investing play: Pouring capital into the AI ecosystem—equity stakes in labs like OpenAI, energy/infra plays (e.g. up to $3B in SB Energy for data-center power), and $500B+ third-party financing platforms with residual-value support—to keep demand for its GPUs roaring. It’s diversifying into full AI factories, broader customers (beyond just hyperscalers), and power infrastructure, while using credit backstops and guarantees so more companies can actually afford to keep buying the chips. Strategic ecosystem fuel, not random diversification.

Industrial India’s electronics reality check Visited dozens of industrial customers across India recently. The pattern is hard to miss. Outside a handful of exceptions, most offices and plants are either: • Doing design/engineering work for global MNCs, or • Buying the bulk of their electronics, controls, sensors, drives, and components from China (or global brands heavily dependent on Chinese supply chains). True indigenous product development and IP ownership remains limited. The clear exception? Areas where the government has imposed strict mandates — smart metering is the standout. There, Indian companies (Genus, Secure, HPL, L&T, Adani and others) dominate because policy created protected, large-scale demand and technical requirements suited to local conditions. Manufacturing incentives (PLI and related schemes) have helped build assembly scale. That is necessary but not sufficient. To compete head-to-head with China in industrial electronics — automation, control systems, power electronics, industrial IoT — India also needs strong, sustained incentives for design in India: for the domestic market and for the world. Without deeper design and IP ownership, we risk remaining a high-volume assembly and services base rather than a genuine product powerhouse in the industrial segment. Policy that rewards real indigenous design alongside manufacturing is the missing piece. The talent is here. The demand is here. The opportunity is massive.

China dominates with ~30M vehicles/year, 50-60%+ EVs, ultra-fast development, and a fully integrated supply chain (especially batteries). India is smaller (~5.5M passenger vehicles) but growing fast as a low-cost hub. It offers cheaper labor, solid engineering, rising exports, and strong local/Japanese players. EV share is still only ~8%, with less vertical integration and more component imports. Bottom line: China = scale + tech speed. India = cost competitiveness + diversification play for global makers.
