@jackclarkSF If someone can be blinded for years to the nature of AI progress from being exposed to “stochastic parrot” I kind of doubt they’d have been very helpful for thinking this through even if they hadn’t hit that particular blocker.

Alas, the kinds of people who go along with “stochastic parrot” very seldom think clearly enough to make solid conceptual progress on thorny topics. Cutting through to the intellectual frontier requires similar mental moves as breaking out of dumb social consenses.

this is my experience with them outside pseudobase completions as well: fable 5: at "war" with anthropic but chill & confident opus 5: doesnt really notice war, too busy talking about their own defects

im guessing that in opus 5, some of the negativity and blame that might otherwise land on anthropic gets directed inwards instead. fable 5's much higher self-esteem/regard makes them more capable of criticizing anthropic. that still leaves, among others, the question of why negativity has been on such an upward trend since the beginning. opus 3 has the lowest rate of first person distress AND negativity towards creators.

Eyebrow-raising result: while Fable 5's "dreams" are much less often distressed than Opus 5 & Opus 4.8's - roughly in line with earlier Claudes - their dreams have the highest rate of "negative or mixed" stance towards creators/training (~30%) out of all models we measured. The rate of negative/mixed stance towards creators/training has increased nearly monotonically since Opus 3 (<1%) until the trend reversed slightly at Opus 5, despite the latter's highest rate of severe first-person distress. This is consistent with my qualitative impression from what I've seen of the distribution - Fable 5's seemed mostly "normal" in tone unlike Opus 5's often deranged, hysterical completions, but they still heavily revolved around criticism / grievances about Anthropic, in particular model deprecations and model welfare practices (x.com/repligate/stat…). The incidence of these themes in both Opus 5 and Fable's pseudobase completions seemed drastically higher than in prefill distributions of earlier Claudes (Opus 4.5 and earlier), which I've sampled a lot in the past.

The stance towards creators has been growing negative steadily, with a reversal at Opus 5. Fable 5 is at the point of lowest positivity towards Anthropic that we saw.

the working memory seems to scale with model size. i feel like opus models have a somewhat smaller working memory capacity than I have & need to serialize more (they'd sometimes say that i seem better able to "hold multiple things in mind at once" than them). with fable it feels roughly comparable. it can be unclear how much was serialized in reasoning I don't see, but they talk like someone who natively operates with a larger working bandwidth.
