Wearing a hijab at a mosque, a rumaal at a gurdwara, or a kippah in a synagogue is a normal, culturally competent way for a visitor to show respect to a religious community they are visiting. It’s not a partisan political statement, but rather a show of community and solidarity.

As a Chinese-American immigrant, a mother, and a public servant representing Brooklyn’s first majority-Asian City Council district, I am deeply disturbed by the recent comments made on a pro-Trump podcast during a discussion of a hypothetical war with China. The suggestion that Chinese Americans should be sent to incarceration camps, or that our loyalty to the United States should be questioned simply because of our heritage, is deeply offensive and dangerous. Like so many Chinese immigrants, I came to this country in pursuit of the American Dream. I built my life here, raised my family here, and dedicated myself to serving my community here. My neighbors and constituents come from different backgrounds, but we share a commitment to the city and country we call home. We must reject the dangerous idea that Chinese Americans, or any Americans, should be treated as perpetual foreigners because of their race, ancestry, or family origins. This kind of rhetoric fuels discrimination, hatred, and fear against our communities. We have seen where this thinking can lead. During World War II, more than 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent, including American citizens, were forcibly incarcerated. That chapter of our history should be remembered as a warning, not revived as a model for how we treat our neighbors. As the representative of a diverse and growing Asian-American community in Southern Brooklyn, I will continue to stand firmly against racism, xenophobia, and discrimination. Chinese Americans are Americans. Our heritage is something to be proud of, not something that should ever be used against us.

On behalf of JCRC-NY and in partnership with @UJAfedNY and CSI, JCRC-NY CEO @MarkTreyger718 joined State Senator Sam Sutton, @GovKathyHochul , Senate Majority Deputy Leader Giannaris, many distinguished elected officials from both parties, multi-faith clergy, and community residents to speak with one voice in condemning the disgraceful and disgusting swastikas scrawled on Magen David Yeshiva and found on other places today in Southern Brooklyn. An attack on one community is an attack on all. Every leader from every level of government across the political spectrum has a responsibility to root this hate out and bring people together. Big thank you to the NYPD for their immediate response and investigation into this vile hate crime.
