Rent is doing the heavy lifting in GPU economics. Two years into ownership, an H100 bought at $19.4k is worth about $34.0k to its owner: $20.6k in estimated resale (still above purchase price) plus $13.4k in cumulative net rent. That's +75.6%. A B300 bought at $54.0k sits at $65.5k (+21.2%), with resale already down 5.2%. Rent is what covers the gap. Ornn's projections to Sep 2028 push this further. Resale keeps falling ($14.3k H100, $32.5k B300), but rent keeps stacking, taking owner value to $63.4k (+227%) and $186.0k (+244%). Depreciation curves alone badly understate what compute is worth. The real question for the AI capex debate isn't how fast GPUs lose resale value, but how long rental rates and utilization hold up. Taiwan’s August export orders soared 71.4% year-on-year to a fresh record high US$102.96 billion, media report, beating the 63% growth expected. AI-related demand led, but a surge in custom ASIC chip design orders caused August’s upside surprise, said W.C. Huang, director-general of Taiwan’s statistics bureau. Orders for ICT (information and communications technology) rose 100.5% year-on-year to $34.21B, while electronics +83.9% to $45.75 billion. Orders from the US led all others, +88.9% to $42.13B, while ASEAN +70.5% to $18.35B. September export orders are expected to top August’s, with $106B to $109.1B the official range.
