When Obsidian started in 2020 its main point of differentiation was the idea of links: connected sets of notes. There were already many Markdown editors for single files back then that interoperate with Obsidian. We didn't expect Markdown to become the file format that the whole world runs on, nor that Obsidian would become people's favorite editor for those loose files. We were focused on making it work well to manage knowledge bases. So during that time Obsidian became more feature-rich which in a way made it much harder to add single note editing because we want it to work well with all the expectations people have of Obsidian including non-trivial things like - Cross-platform support - Compatibility with plugins and existing APIs - Updating instantly based on external file changes - Displaying relative path embeds like images Plus a long tail of questions we to answer to make the experience smooth like what vault settings does it open with? So that's why it took a while ☺️

This is Knap. It's a new language I created that turns data into Markdown. The syntax should feel familiar and comes with wonderfully pleasant features to modify and format plain text. Knap is open source. Over a million people already use Knap directly or indirectly because it started as the templating language I made for Obsidian Web Clipper. Now any tool can use it. You can add Knap to your app or use it via CLI. Create a batch of Markdown files from JSON or CSV, or pipe Defuddle directly into Knap to generate Markdown from HTML/URLs. The Knap site is color-coded to help beginners understand the relationship between variables (blue), filters (orange), and logic (green). I've tried to document it as comprehensively as I can. Try the Knap Playground so you can see how fun the syntax is to use! Knap is pronounced /knæp/ (with a hard k). It's named after knapping (with a silent k): the process of shaping stones to form arrowheads, scrapers, and other tools. Enjoy!

Obsidian 1.13.6 is now available to all for desktop and mobile. Highlights - Mobile: Added swipe-to-close to close tabs in the tab switcher. - Improved "Undo close tab" behavior. Tabs now reopen in the correct tab group, and if the currently active tab is the "New tab" page, it will no longer be reused. - The settings window now closes when pressing `Escape`, and more improvements to keyboard navigation. - When Obsidian is fullscreen, the settings window now opens on top of the app window instead of creating an additional fullscreen window. - Range sliders in settings now use the accent color. - The installer has been updated to use Electron 43.3.0. To upgrade, visit the download page and reinstall Obsidian. Bug fixes - The app now waits for configuration files to finish saving when quitting to avoid the file getting corrupted. - iOS: Fixed editor sometimes selecting entire paragraph after double-tapping on text or dragging cursor. - Fixed a few issues with link suggestions in the property editor. For example, typing `#` in a link would cause the link to get overridden. - Fixed dragging links out of an embedded Base (e.g. `![[file.base]]`) linking to the Base file and not the file you're dragging. - Live Preview: Fixed memory leak caused by reordering rows or columns in a Markdown table. - Live Preview: Restored old behavior of embedded YouTube and Twitter links; they no longer have a selection state or an overlayed edit button. - Fixed zoom level getting reset after reloading the window and vaults on network drives not working with the latest installer.
