STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PIG FARMING 🐖💰 Pig farming is one of the fastest ways to make profit in agriculture. With the right breed and management, pigs can reach market weight in just 5–6 months, producing large litters and offering multiple income streams beyond meat. Whether you have a small plot or access to larger farmland, this business can be started on a budget and scaled quickly. Here’s your beginner-friendly roadmap from your first piglet to your first sale: 1️⃣ Pick your model (start small): Fattening: buy 12–20 kg weaners → raise to 90–110 kg in ~5–6 months. Breeding: 3–10 sows + 1 boar (or AI). Start with fattening if you’re new. 2️⃣ Choose a site: Dry, well-drained land, good access to water & feed, downwind from homes. Plan for expansion. 3️⃣ Build simple, clean housing: Concrete floor with 1–2% slope to a drain, half-wall + wire for airflow, roof with overhang. Space guide: growers/finishers 1.2–1.8 m²/pig; dry sow 1.8–2.5 m². Add footbath at the entrance; keep a separate sick/isolation pen. 4️⃣ Buy healthy stock (from one source): Active, bright eyes, no cough/diarrhea, uniform size. Ask for deworming history. Transport calmly. 5️⃣ Quarantine & biosecurity (non-negotiable): 14 days quarantine for new pigs, limit visitors, dedicated boots/clothes, rodent control. Note: African Swine Fever has no vaccine—cleanliness and separation protect your farm. 6️⃣ Feeding plan (keep it simple): Use quality rations by stage: Weaner: 18–20% CP Grower: 16–18% CP Finisher: 14–16% CP Rule of thumb/day: 20 kg pig → ~1.0 kg feed 50 kg pig → ~2.0–2.5 kg 90 kg pig → ~3.0–3.5 kg Feed 2–3× daily, remove leftovers to avoid waste. 7️⃣ Water, water, water: Clean water always. Finishers need ~8–12 L/day; lactating sows can need 25–45 L/day. 8️⃣ Health routine (work with a vet): Piglets: iron at 3–5 days (where recommended), coccidia control, tail/teeth only by trained hands if you do them. Deworm at ~8 weeks, then every 2–3 months. Vaccines vary by area (e.g., erysipelas; parvo/lepto for breeders). Follow local vet guidance. Daily check: appetite, breathing, manure, skin, gait. 9️⃣ Breeding basics (if breeding): Crossbreeds like Large White × Landrace × Duroc do well. Gilts first service at 120–140 kg. Gestation = 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days (114 days). Wean at 28–35 days; heat returns 4–7 days post-weaning. 🔟 Growth targets (track weekly): ADG: 600–800 g/day. FCR: ~2.8–3.2:1 (kg feed : kg gain). Mortality (grower/finisher): <5%. If pigs lag, check feed quality, parasites, and ventilation. 1️⃣1️⃣ Manure & odour control: Daily scraping + wash-down; compost bedding/manure or channel to biogas. Keep drains unclogged. 1️⃣2️⃣ Sell smart: Pre-book buyers 3–4 weeks before target weight (90–110 kg). Withhold feed ~12 hours pre-transport (water available). Keep handling calm to reduce carcass stress. Starter checklist: site ✅ pens ✅ feeder/drinker ✅ footbath ✅ scale/tape ✅ records ✅ vet contact ✅ dewormer/disinfectant ✅ 📌 Save this post and follow for more...
