By sending all of this at once and thus rendering them all at once, we reduce the amount of times we move data between CPU/RAM and GPU. This technique is called 'instanced rendering'. #gamedev #indiegamedev #indiegame

Upon game start, this image is sent to the GPU as a texture, accessible in a single shader. Along with sending this image, we also send all the vertex data, scales, locations, sprite indexes/texture coordinates for all visuals in the game tightly packed in a array. #gamedev

Our first game, "Bob Goes Quantum", is sprite-based. We store all sprites in a single image or atlas. We have a ruby script that regenerates this image and regenerates the zig code for accessing individual sprites in the image to make referencing sprites in code nice. #gamedev

As we mentioned previously, we hand draw our levels first. Here is our biggest level yet, requires 37 moves to solve. Took us a while to figure it out ourselves. This one will probably be one of the later puzzles due to the size/difficulty. #gamedev #indiedev

We use ruby to generate zig code. Different languages are better at different things. We recommend knowing at least one "scripting language" and one "systems language" to be a productive programmer. #gamedev #indiedev

We built the "engine" for our first game from scratch. You probably can't call it an engine, it's a framework for building this single game. It is not a general solution. We won't be able to leverage most of it for future projects. And that is ok! #gamedev #indiedev

For learning OpenGL, we recommend learnopengl.com by @JoeyDeVriez . It has great explanations and plenty of examples for the basics and advanced techniques. We referenced it heavily when beginning our graphics programming journey years ago. #gamedev #indiedev
