I have now visited every county in Minnesota this year – all 87 of them! I do this every year because you can’t know what people need if you don’t show up. As Governor, that’s how I’ll lead – by showing up, listening, and bringing people together to get things done.

South Carolina passed a law in 1740 banning enslaved people from learning to write, from gathering in groups, from growing their own food, and from earning money. It also banned them from wearing nice clothes. There is a clause in the statute specifying the quality of fabric a Black person was permitted to wear. It is called the Negro Act. It was passed the year after the Stono Rebellion, which we have covered on this page — and every clause in it is a confession about what frightened them. Writing was banned because literate people can forge a pass. Assembly was banned because that is how a rebellion is planned. Growing your own food and earning your own money were banned because a person with savings can buy a horse, a weapon, or a journey. And clothing was banned because the law could not tolerate a Black person looking prosperous. The statute authorised officials to seize and destroy any garment judged above the permitted grade — the coarse stuff that became known as "Negro cloth."

Every time your phone tells you where you are, it is using a mathematical model of the shape of the Earth. A Black woman from rural Virginia spent decades building that model by hand, and almost nobody knew her name until she was in her eighties. Gladys West. She grew up in a sharecropping family in Dinwiddie County and understood early that the alternatives were the tobacco fields or the factory. She finished top of her high school class, which came with a scholarship, and took it. Her work was satellite geodesy: taking the raw data coming down from orbit and using it to compute, correction by correction, the true irregular shape of the Earth. Not a sphere. Not even a neat ellipsoid. A lumpy thing with gravitational highs and lows. That model is the foundation the Global Positioning System sits on. You cannot locate a point on a surface until you know precisely what the surface is. She did this for decades, largely unremarked, and retired in 1998. She was recognised in 2018, when her sorority mentioned her biography at a function and someone realised what was in it. The Air Force inducted her into its Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame. She earned a PhD in her seventies.

Tradition says that for good fortune all October long, you should say "RABBIT RABBIT!" as your very first words of the new month. Or why not THREE rabbits? Welcoming the day with a dance of gratitude is also a good beginning. #rabbitrabbit #rabbitrabbitrabbit

The knock has always been could a woman president be as strong on the world stage as a man. I'd take Amy Klobuchar every day of the week. She's quick as hell, she takes zero shit, & she does it with a smile so you know she just smacked you around but there's nothing you can do.

This is Michael I. Kotlikoff, President of Cornell University, who thought a written essay to be a sufficient consequence for drugging, rape and sexual assault. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, SIR. YOU SHOULD RESIGN, SIR. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON CORNELL UNIVERSITY.

From a friend… If anyone wonders why you or I are liberal Democrats show them this post. Women: "Can I have birth control?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "I couldn't get birth control so I got pregnant. Can I have an abortion?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "You prevented me from having an abortion so I'm carrying the fetus, but my employer won't provide reasonable accommodations and is threatening to fire me. Would you please pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No" Women: "I had the baby, but I'm out of work. Can I have WIC and food stamps until I get back on my feet?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "I found a job, but it doesn't offer me insurance. Can I have government guaranteed insurance?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "My kid got sick and I got fired because I missed time caring for him/her. Can I get unemployment?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "I'm having a hard time getting my kid from school consistently. Can we fund after-school programs?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No." Women: "I'm prepared to work to support my family. Can you make sure that a full-time job's minimum wage is enough to do that?" Republican Controlled Congress: "No. But what's the matter with you and your family, that working two jobs can't lift you out of poverty? And what kind of a mother are you, letting someone else watch your child while you work? If your child doesn't do well in school or gets in trouble, it's entirely your fault. You shouldn't have had a child if you weren't prepared to take care of him/her." ~Via Claudia Powell

I will never understand why a woman's future is never as "promising" as her rapists.

Someone told me I shouldn’t help spread pictures of the Cornell 7 guys, because it might destroy their lives. Sweetie, that’s what I’m counting on.

When Minnesota tried to cap the cost of insulin, Lisa Demuth voted no — twice. My record is different: I stood up to Big Pharma and voted to cap insulin costs for seniors and led the successful effort to force pharma to negotiate prices with Medicare. I will fight to bring down drug costs for Minnesotans as Governor.

The recent Cornell University rape victim was 20 when they raped her- a legal adult. So what? She admits to getting drunk at her sorority before she went out. So what? She admits to drinking more at a club before arriving at the Frat house that night. So what? None of this matters. She didn't consent. Bad decisions do not cancel out the need for consent. Read that again: Bad decisions do not cancel out the need for consent. Rape is rape is rape is rape. Full stop. 🛑

THEM: "But you'll ruin that young man's life if you report report him for sexual assault." ME: Correct. I'd prefer if he didn't get to become a Supreme Court Judge or run for fucking President.

For Christians, the poor are not a sociological category, but the very ‘flesh’ of Christ. Christ, poor and crucified, continues to allow Himself to be encountered and loved through these men and women, who call us to go beyond ourselves and to dare to practice charity. #ApostolicJourney #France vatican.va/content/leo-xi…

@MerriamWebster You don’t “graduate” high school or college. You graduate FROM a school.

JD Vance says the Administration is removing 760,000 people who are enrolled in Affordable Care Act coverage to fight fraud. If this Administration has real evidence of fraud, by all means, prosecute every last one of these brokers who committed it. But explain this to me: Trump pardoned a man convicted of health care fraud. He commuted the sentence of another who orchestrated a $205 million Medicare fraud scheme. If this Administration is so concerned about fraud in our health care system, why is Trump granting clemency to people convicted of committing it? washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

Colorado wanting to legalize the bodily inspection of all school aged girls in sports to ensure they’re not trans is the same as men checking women for witch marks in the 1600s. FFS, when will we stop allowing women and children to be harmed by pedophiles and perverts?

She was bought at fourteen by a man who assaulted her for five years and fathered two of her children. When she finally fought back and he died, Missouri put her on trial — and the court ruled she had no right to defend herself. Celia. 1855. Missouri law at the time said a woman could use deadly force to defend her honour. Celia's lawyers argued that law covered her. The judge ruled it did not — because the statute said "any woman," and Celia was not legally a woman. She was property. That was the finding. Not that she was lying. Not that it had not happened. That the protection did not extend to her, because she was a thing. She was convicted and sentenced to hang. The state waited until she had given birth — the baby was stillborn — and then executed her in December 1855. She was nineteen years old. Her story is the kind of buried history that we must never forget savvypurchase.samcart.com/products/150-c…
