Here are some moments from our lunch with the delegates at the 2026 FIDE Congress. It was great to see many of them attend and engage in genuine discussions about chess and the future of our sport. Beyond formal meetings and busy schedules, conversations like these matter.

I have said publicly that I support the direction of the Buettner/Pein platform. You should always know where a candidate stands. Nevertheless, my candidacy is independent and nominated by five (5) member federations. National federations are the effective owners of FIDE and this stems not only from the FIDE Charter. Anyone can create another “FIDE” chess organisation, with a similar name, in another jurisdiction, but it would have minimal value. What makes our FIDE valuable is precisely its 204 member federations. They have gifted FIDE a global network across every market and culture, a rating database with over half a million registered players and the institutional backing that enabled FIDE to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Despite all of this, no systematic share of FIDE's revenue reaches the National Federations. Among the three Presidential candidates, the Buettner/Pein ticket proposes a 20% revenue share. It is something I fully agree with. I appreciate that now other candidates are also addressing the national federations as beneficial owners of FIDE. From my side, there would be no winners and no losers on the 27th of September. Whichever ticket and Council members the FIDE GA elects, we all have to work with each other constructively. Joint Statement from Jan Henric Buettner and Malcolm Pein We want to correct some speculation circulating in Samarkand about our position in the FIDE presidential election. We are running together because we believe FIDE needs fundamental reform. Too much currently depends on the powers and discretion of the President. Real reform means building an institution that does not depend on who happens to occupy that office. Our criticism is not directed at the many good people working for FIDE. It is directed at structures that create dependency, secrecy and conflicts of interest. Malcolm brings his 45 years of experience in chess — as a professional player and International Master, coach, organiser, entrepreneur, and the founder of a chess in schools charity that organises mass events, from community chess to elite international competitions such as the London Chess Classic and World Championship events. Jan brings the perspective of someone from outside the traditional sports-federation system. Together, we believe those experiences complement each other: deep knowledge of chess combined with the willingness to question structures that have existed for too long simply because “this is how it has always been done.” Our program follows a simple principle: GOVERNANCE FIRST — GROWTH FOLLOWS REFORM: Professional management. Transparency. Independent controls. Less presidential discretion. End patronage. EMPOWER: Predictable funding. 20% of FIDE revenues distributed to federations. More opportunities. Federations become stakeholders rather than clients. GROW: Commercial partnerships. New audiences. Digital products. Classical chess protected, while Rapid, Blitz and Freestyle expand the overall market. We both believe completely in this program and intend to win this election together in order to implement it. That is why we also want to address directly a narrative suggesting that our principal objective is simply to prevent Vadim Rosenstein from becoming President, and that if our ticket were eliminated, we would support Timur Turlov. That is not our position. Neither of us has agreed to deliver support or votes to Timur Turlov in any subsequent round. Neither of us has been promised or accepted a position in a future Turlov administration. There is no deal, no promised position and no second-round arrangement. Our focus is on winning this election together. Recent events have also reinforced another fundamental consideration: FIDE needs stability. Federations are electing a leadership for four years. They are entitled to consider which ticket can provide stable, independent and professional leadership throughout that period, without exposing FIDE to uncertainty surrounding its President. We will not speculate about what may happen to either of the other candidates. Allegations, investigations and possible sanctions belong with the appropriate authorities, and everyone is entitled to due process. Our case is a positive one: our ticket offers stability, independence and professional governance, allowing FIDE's leadership to concentrate from day one on chess and chess alone. Nor do we presume that anyone can “deliver” the votes of national federations. Delegates will make their own decisions in every round of voting, as they should. For the remaining days, our complete focus is therefore on the Buettner/Pein program and the mandate we are seeking to lead FIDE together for the next four years. No deal with another ticket. No second-round arrangement. We stand for: INDEPENDENCE vs. PATRONAGE STABILITY vs. UNCERTAINTY And we are asking the federations to judge our ticket on that choice and on the program we have put forward. @chess_insights @FIDE_chess I have huge trust in @TelegraphChess. As I stated, FIDE would instantly be free of corruption, bad behaviour towards women and influence from Russia under his leadership. And I believe in FIDE being attractive to sponsor on a market basis, not having to rely on "donations"
