Kalshi’s weather markets are pacing towards $1.1bn in annualised volume after growing 500% year on year. That sounds bigger than it is. Weather is still a small part of a sports-dominated exchange, and $1.1bn is a run-rate, not a settled 12-month total. But strategically, this matters. Weather is Kalshi’s first non-sports vertical with a credible route from retail speculation to commercial risk transfer. Daily temperature and precipitation contracts are simple enough for consumers to trade, while the underlying risk is familiar to energy, agriculture, logistics, insurance and retail businesses. The real test is whether weather becomes useful hedging infrastructure, or remains a small trading category riding Kalshi’s sports liquidity.

Prediction markets have spent years arguing they are not sportsbooks with better lawyers. The Ninth Circuit has now called Kalshi’s sports contracts what they look like: bets. Judge Ryan Nelson reached for Romeo and Juliet to make the point. A rose by any other name is still a rose. A sports bet labelled an “event contract” is still gambling. The Third Circuit says these products are federally regulated swaps. The Ninth says they are sports bets subject to state gambling laws. Same products. Same federal statute. Opposite result. That is a Supreme Court problem. This is not just a legal argument. It determines whether one federally designated market can offer sports betting nationwide without state licences, gaming taxes or geographic restrictions. If Kalshi wins, America has created a federal back door into sports betting. If the states win, sports prediction markets will have to operate like sportsbooks. The CFTC was built to police derivatives, not become America’s national gambling regulator. The Supreme Court may now have to decide whether Congress quietly gave it that job.

The AI policy maths from the UK: Scaling laws move fast. Westminster doesn’t. Real risks: cyber, bioweapons, self-improving systems. Proposed answers: third-party audits, government blocks on unsafe models, displacement taxes, democratic supply chain coalitions. My honest read: the acceleration bits will happen because money wants them to. The protection bits (liberties, global coordination, blocking unsafe models) probably won’t. Plan accordingly.
