@profplate Good question. Since July 25, several studies have been published showing negative results for student AI use (e.g. Strömberg, et al, 2026) and teacher AI use (e.g. Sungu, et al, 2026). These have been reported on widely in the mainstream press.

@griswold I'm not sure A & B are so easily quantified but I agree that more public school leaders should articulate that the public has tasked their schools with broader goals than just maximizing an individual student's academic learning outcomes.

@griswold Two goals are in tension: a) maximize a kid's individual learning outcomes b) prepare them to live in a pluralistic democracy with people who aren't as smart as them. Many parents do not value (b) as a goal. Fine, but many do, and I'm naming it as a goal, one that isn't free.

When tech Twitter claims to have hacked learning, their one weird trick for saving time is often just to do LESS stuff — to teach math at shallower depth or to teach kids to negotiate their ideas with fewer other kids who differ from them in fewer ways.
