Story telling and movie-making techniques had evolved quite a bit since the original SW when the prequels finally came out. And it didn't feel like the writers of these movies really understood that. Darth Maul (the red faced dude here) was the face of this movie in all the marketing, but appears in the movie for about 6 minutes with three lines of dialogue. In retrospect, however, we really had no idea how bad things would become... (except Rogue One and Andor).
