She seems to mistake the surface of things for the whole picture. A NYT reporter could well be able to get the most visible problem on the surface fixed immediately. That scrutiny might then cause the school or district itself to get better at disguising the deeper issues at play (like the values, beliefs, incentives, policies, etc, upholding the current conditions).

People will overthink this but they don’t have to. American exceptionalism doesn’t exist. New York exceptionalism does. Both come from privilege but play to populist instincts. Both emerged from the outer boroughs (the same outer borough, in fact), where the desire to make it in, and also be taken seriously by, Manhattan can become a defining characteristic. Both were written off as political nonstarters, then went on to defeat Democratic political dynasties. Mamdani, I’d wager, is being tactical. Trump just admires game when he sees it.
