Instead of shutting down a line, workers can now remotely operate specialized robots to perform maintenance while the electricity keeps flowing. These machines work on live 10-kilovolt distribution lines, handling tasks like stripping insulation, installing components, tightening bolts, and making precise connections. And this isn't just a lab experiment. The technology has been deployed across 26 provincial and municipal power companies in China. In one recent operation in Gansu, a remotely controlled robot worked on a live line at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, completing a series of precise tasks without interrupting power to customers. The bigger story isn't just that a robot can manipulate a power line. It's that robots are starting to take humans out of the most dangerous parts of the job — while keeping the infrastructure running. AI and robotics aren't only coming for office work.
