I’ve been living with the bare minimum the past few weeks. I moved into my apartment three weeks ago, but the majority of my belongings are still in storage. I have an air mattress, a coffee pot, a single coffee mug and three spoons. I’ve got my hygiene things, just enough clothing, some cleaning supplies. My cat, his things. A laptop, an additional monitor, books and journals. Honestly, it kind of makes me want to throw away most of the rest of my belongings. It’s all just borrowed, anyway, right?

My lease for my apartment ended mid-June. I truly didn’t want to leave that space. I was on the third floor of a garden style apartment overlooking a nature preserve. I had no one above me. My neighbors were quiet and clean. Trees created additional privacy. I’d put so much thought into the curation of that space. It felt like my own little slice of heaven. I loved living there, but despite the positives, I knew I was paying too much. My rent was $1531/mo and throughout winter I watched units 40% larger than mine list for 20% less. I knew rent would be higher in the summer, but overall rental prices were trending downwards. In March, my property management company offered my lease renewal terms. Despite the decrease in the market, they wanted to increase my rent by 2%. I didn’t think my place would rent for $1400 if put on the market, so I asked to negotiate. I told myself if they’d come down to $1400-1450, I’d renew. Sadly, they declined to even open negotiations. So, I moved my things into storage in June and I headed out west to deal the WSOP. Not having to pay rent back home was a nice bonus. I got back to Dallas yesterday. Two days ago, I checked in on my old unit. It was still vacant, and the new asking price was $1333/mo with the first month free. I signed my new lease documents today.

I am genuinely sad as this summer comes to an end. The WSOP is truly special. Every summer is packed with growth, and something about the slower pace of the development of connections over the years deepens the magic. Love y’all. See you next year.
