Lately I’m reading biblical scholars, historians, statisticians instead of mainstream evangelical positions. They are pushing against some things understood as Biblical Truth and evaluating them. Just like we are all called to do, just like the Bereans of Acts 17:11.

THE NUN WHO WALKED INTO AN ALL-MALE COMPUTER LAB — AND HELPED UNLOCK PROGRAMMING FOR THE REST OF US She wrote the book on BASIC In 1965, a 51-year-old Catholic sister in a black habit stood among the graduates at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and collected something no American woman had ever held: a doctorate in computer science. Hours earlier, a man in St. Louis had received a similar degree. Together they became the first two people in the United States to finish doctorates in the new field. She was the first woman. Her name was Sister Mary Kenneth Keller. Born Evelyn Marie Keller in Cleveland on December 17, 1913, she entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at eighteen and took her vows in 1940. That should have been the whole story: classroom, convent, quiet life. It was not. While teaching, she earned a mathematics degree, then a master’s in mathematics and physics from DePaul. Computers barely existed. Women were not supposed to chase them. She chased them anyway. The computer moment of her life was Dartmouth in the early 1960s. The college was still men-only. The computer center was a closed world of specialists and punch cards. Dartmouth made an exception so a sister in a habit could walk in. There she met the project that would change who got to talk to machines: BASIC, the language John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz were building so ordinary students — not just mathematicians — could program. Keller did not invent BASIC. She did something almost as dangerous. She learned it, taught it, and later co-wrote a textbook that carried it far beyond the lab. Her own line about that first encounter is still the best: “I just went out to look at a computer one day, and I never came back.” In 1965 she finished her Wisconsin dissertation, “Inductive Inference on Computer Generated Patterns,” work that treated the machine as something that could find patterns and, in a primitive way, learn. Then she went home to Clarke College, a small Catholic women’s school in Dubuque, Iowa, and founded its computer science department — one of the first at a small college in America. She ran it for nearly two decades. Mothers were told to bring their babies to class if they had to. Computers, she insisted, would not stay locked in elite rooms. They would become teaching tools, library engines, and — she said this out loud in the 1960s — mechanical simulators of thought. She did not invent the computer. She was not the sole author of BASIC. What she did was more subversive. At a moment when “woman,” “nun,” and “computer scientist” sounded like a punchline, she made them a single life. Programming, she argued, should never belong only to a priesthood of specialists. A sister in a habit had already proven the point. The machines were coming for everyone. She intended to get there first — and to leave the door open behind her.

@chiefkittenme My granddaughter (1.5) was trying to work a belt. I thought I’d show her/practice my Spanish and said, "Traerme el cinturon." What blew me away —doubly— was the fact that I spoke something intelligible in Spanish, and that granddaughter understood and brought the belt.

I’ve been bingeing Maria Killam’s decorating channel on youtube. Lamps in every corner. Really digging it. On to finish decorating my house.

When travelling, it’s a good idea to know the first aid phrases in the country you are visiting, such as "call an ambulance," "i need a towel," "he needs to stay on the floor," etc. Ken from Pennsylvania, I hope you are making a good recovery, thinking of you.
