The reason keys on a Lightning node are risky: the node is a big program facing the internet, running plugins and dozens of dependencies. VLS moves the keys to a small separate signer, out of that blast radius.

"Non-custodial" should mean your servers cannot move user funds even if hacked. VLS makes that true: the user's signer holds the keys and enforces the rules, not your infrastructure.

A compromised node can ask VLS to close a channel to the attacker's address. VLS checks the destination against your approved list, does not find it, and refuses. No signature, no close, no loss.

A VLS rule you can set: fee bounds. If a transaction would pay more in fees than you allow, VLS refuses to sign it. That blocks draining a channel through inflated routing fees.

VLS refuses to sign a channel state you have already revoked. Replaying an old state is a classic Lightning theft. The signer tracks which states are dead and will not sign them.

On most Lightning setups the node holds the keys and can sign anything. VLS moves the keys to a separate signer that checks each request first, so a compromised node can no longer sign whatever it wants.

Picture an attacker taking full control of your Lightning node tonight. With keys on the node, the funds are gone. With VLS, the attacker can ask it to sign, but every request is checked against your channel state and limits first.

A VLS rule you can set: velocity limits. VLS caps how much value can leave a channel in a given window. A node trying to drain funds through many small payments hits the cap and stops.
