Since his first term, President Trump has leveraged tariffs to promote the national interest. Earlier this week, Congress granted major tariff authority to the President for the first time since 1974, delivering a critical tool to hold trading partners accountable and bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Today’s signing of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act demonstrates the growing bipartisan recognition that tariffs are an effective tool to safeguard our economic and national security and establish lasting peace and prosperity. Senator Lindsey Graham was a patriot who understood that economic security is national security. This historic legislation bearing his name honors his legacy and closes off vital resources fueling this terrible war.

Over two centuries ago, our Founding Fathers laid the foundation for the most prosperous trade zone in the world: the United States of America. Article I, Section 10 of the Constitution established our nation’s first and most important trade agreement by securing free trade among the states. But, as America became a world leader, our policymakers began to undermine our economic and national sovereignty by entering organizations and trade agreements that flooded our markets with foreign labor, capital, goods, and services. By using tariffs and trade deals, President Trump is ending decades of one-sided trade agreements and globalist policies to protect American workers and reclaim the economic independence contemplated by the U.S. Constitution. The Ambassadors noted the opportunity to strengthen our countries’ bilateral economic relationship and highlighted the importance of President Abinader’s repeal of Decree 693-24 to meet the Dominican Republic’s market access obligations under the CAFTA-DR with respect to access for U.S. rice.
