A very important intervention from Lord Harper in last week's Lords debate: the Treasury will obviously want GBROR’s ticketing costs to be as low as possible. If it can’t operate more efficiently than the 4.5% commission paid to independent retailers, he even suggested it shouldn’t be in the retail business. Clear, channel specific accounting is essential to show whether it is operating at that level and whether any subsidy is flowing into GBR’s online arm. #RailwaysBill #IndependentRetail #RailRetail #UKRail

Sure but it would also be "odd" if sales thro the website and app cost taxpayers more than the commission paid to independent retailers. No one has submitted a good reason why they could be. The official line is they can't be separated from retailing at stations but why not? Shouldn't every business know its costs "by function"?

@jerryalderson @Captain_Deltic That sums it up exactly. Retailers need this sorted in the legislation, too much harm can occur before a CMA inquiry concludes. The CMA have basically said that too.

@Captain_Deltic They obviously did the sums and realised it ain't easy at the equivalent of 4.5% commission to wash its face/avoid being subsidised and Govts have a "thing" about not charging a booking fee. Booking fees would be like VAT, paid by users as opposed to all taxpayers.

@Captain_Deltic Why should taxpayers pay more for online sales thro GBROR than the commission paid to independent retailers? If anyone can give me a good answer, I'll give you a £50 train ticket voucher. I'm the sole "judge" :-)
