Unpleasant thing that most people don’t know about, which is that there is only one single producer of Amoxicillin in the United States Even worse, this lone producer has only one single manufacturing facility — the only remaining FDA-approved facility able to produce this class of drugs domestically And that this sole manufacturing plant fell into bankruptcy in 2021 (competition from overseas manufacturers), where the Department of Homeland Security had to step in to broker an acquisition deal to ensure it would survive Massive single point of failure. Disaster waiting to happen. There are many other cases like this It should be mandated by joint US National Security and FDA policy that our nation have strategic distributed domestic manufacturing of Antibiotics and other critical drugs that can survive contact with disruptions Even at cost / fully subsidized by the government — They are too important to rely on external producers or single production facilities

The “bio weapon risk” is not “huge” compared to existing AI-free bioweapon risk and boy are these takes completely detached from the realities of virology, bioweapons, and AI. AI people want you to worry about imaginary bioweapons because they don’t want the safety of their own product—like their reckless attitude toward security and acceleration—scrutinized. It’s an attempt at evading regulation.

The AI safety debate has gotten horribly confused. The labs are afraid of humans using ai to do horrible nasty things as they are wont to do. The bio weapon risk is huge. Their opponents wave hands and claim it’s about AI killing us all I am afraid of humans with weapons

Air-free environments are one of the hardest places for humans to work in -- love that we built the largest robotic anaerobic lab in the world for @PNNLab to address this! Important vision from @MichaelKratsios, @ScienceUnderSec, and @POTUS to make US national labs into the "cloud lab" infrastructure for US scientists to order experiments and to connect with AI! @thethingygirl @emirates Similar incident happened to me, although only once, in Qatar Airlines. I thought it may hav been an isolated incident. same attendant ignored me twice, and when I confronted her she said she couldn't hear me, I am pretty sure she heard me both times.

One thing people are missing about the “AI-designed virus” story is all that fear mongering you’re having is actually supposed to get directed toward leaning into the idea even MORE If you are worried about AI designed viruses, security by obscurity is not the answer and will only amplify the risks / harm us further Taking down viral sequence databases will do roughly 0% benefit to help the cause What we actually need to do is become ~very~ good at making AI-designed viruses of all kinds. To deeply understand how to make them, how they work, what a given genome or sequence does, etc That gives us two things: - Ability to effectively screen and identify pathogens and their qualities quickly - Ability to know precisely how they work and everything about them with high confidence… meaning we know exactly how to counteract them effectively With many of these things, the only way through is through. Many of the Biorisks of the future are ones that need to be addressed this way — through leaning further in rather than trying to defeat it through obfuscation (it won’t work at all)
