Pretty much exactly same thing happened in Culture Revolution （1966-1976) in China. It was the period of darkest history in modern history. Many talented experts and professor died during this 10 years. Arrogant activists in student called 紅衛兵(Red Guard) start a cold revolution in society, well respected people, like professors were humiliated publicly. It was called 戴高帽(put tall hat onto someone): professors were enforced to wear such a humiliating hat to indicate their social status are “fake” and was built on “fake knowledge”. This is extreme left try to destroy the social norm, and you can see what type of damage that could led to by understanding this Culture Revolution history
