I am very angry and extremely disappointed that a person was shot on the streets of Austin by ICE. While I’m angry and disappointed, I’m not surprised. This has happened in other cities. With the rogue nature of ICE and the chaos we’re seeing fomented by ICE, there’s no reason to be surprised. Austinites have a right to know what happened and they have a right to feel safe in their community. Though APD was not involved in the shooting, I believe that there needs to be an investigation that APD assures is clear-eyed, as complete as possible, and independent. I’ve discussed this with Chief Davis. Chief Davis deployed APD’s Special Investigation Unit and the Unit has been on scene this afternoon. This is the same unit that investigates Austin’s officer involved shootings. Chief Davis has also been in contact with the Texas Rangers and has asked the Rangers to assist in an investigation. This participation with the Texas Rangers will be important due to the access the Texas Department of Public Safety had early in the incident. As the city continues to receive more information, we will make sure to keep the community aware.

DNC Chair Ken Martin just walked into the Stonewall Caucus. He’s an amazing ally for our LGBGTQIA2S+ community. The DNC is millions in debt while the RNC has $128 million in the bank. That gap means fewer resources for the people organizing and mobilizing our communities.

Austin, Texas and Greater Manchester, UK are officially Sister Cities. Today, I signed an historic agreement to formalize our partnership with government of Greater Manchester. This will unlock opportunities in economic development, innovation, science & technology, education, tourism, arts & music, and urban development. Since the signing of our Friendship Cities Agreement last year, the University of Texas at Austin and University of Manchester entered into a new research seed fund initiative to support international research collaboration between the two institutions. Connecting with international partners brings massive wins straight back home to Austinites. The high-wage jobs we’re creating don’t just boost our quality of life—they attract funding for medical breakthroughs and green tech, bring microchip manufacturing back to the U.S., and pay for the parks, roads, and city services we use every day. Plus, this global attention keeps our iconic live music and arts culture thriving. As we mature into our role on the world stage, we’re focused on growing these benefits for our entire community. I also announced that in late July, the State of Texas, through the new Texas Economic Development Office will build in the work we started today with the signing of this agreement and the very good business roundtable that we held in Manchester. The Texas Economic Development office will reach out and visit Greater Manchester to specifically engage on business. For the first time yesterday, I experienced the new @alamodrafthouse QR code ordering system and I can tell you it’s truly awful. Rather than making ordering food and drink more efficient, it actually adds steps to the process AND if you want to order additional items during the film you HAVE to open your phone. No, your cute reference to that irony in your How To Alamo video doesn’t negate how ridiculous this is. Please don’t cut corners with your staff and revert back to physical menus and order cards.
