It funny to hear about the 17 hour time different between SF and Melbourne. It is not possible to have have more than a 12 hour time difference, unless you think NY and Chicago are 23 hours apart.

Most GWAS are meta-analyses that combine new cohorts with older studies, many of which relied on array-based genotyping. At what point is it better to start over with sequencing-based genotypes? More cases/controls is great, but I wonder when WGS resolution outweighs sample size

One of the great mysteries of academic publishing is why journals insist on taking large Excel tables, whicha re perfectly functional, searchable, and readable, and converting them into 87-page PDFs that are none of those things.

@CalebLareau In my experience, a lot of people develop phylogeny software on optimal samples (with specific, sensitive mutation calls and no copy number alterations) and then apply it to suboptimal samples. Thanks for highlighting the importance of these factors.

I’m noticing an uptick in desperate emails seeking volunteer labor from faculty. It feels like a symptom of the soft-money system reaching its breaking point. What’s striking is how often list-wide requests for unpaid faculty effort go out before remuneration is even considered.
