The opening scene of Superman destroying Metropolis in BvS mirrors 9/11 but visually and in dialogue, workers literally call their families/bosses and tell them they’re not going to make it out of the falling skyscrapers. Further, the whole theme of Superman being a threat we must contain uses him as an allegory for 9/11 and the government response to terror and the Overton window having shifted from a hugely traumatic event. Finally, Batman’s extreme response to stopping Superman is similar to Bush’s war on terror, with Bruce saying he must eliminate this threat using whatever it takes after he changed the way we live and recklessly killed innocents when destroying a city. His speech to Alfred in the Batcave sort of encapsulates how the Bush administrate felt about responding to 9/11. “Even if there’s a 1% chance he could kill us” is reminiscent of the “weapons of mass destruction” rhetoric.

Practical Magic 2 offers wonderful cast chemistry, with meaningful relationship building for the Owens sisters family, and just enough magic mixed with romance. The film does take a while to find any real stakes, and the mystery could use more motivation. Full revenue below.
