@_Beora @DarthMicroT Sure, I think those are equivalent, but I was referring to one name with 16 character limit vs two names. I think even though they’re equivalent you’ll probably get longer and thus more unique names on average with two names because of the mental model people have about names.
@_Beora @DarthMicroT I’d guess they chose to do this for consistency and/or fairness, but I don’t know. I think adding an entire second word to your name expands the name pool by a huge amount, at least from a math pov. But yeah idk, I kinda dig it.

This is a great example of how most people teach kanji wrong. 亻 is a form of 人(person). Learn this and you can understand why this character means “rest”: it depicts a person resting against a tree. Learning actual kanji composition can dramatically speed up your learning.

@Ashiba_Ryotsu Jōyō doesn’t include proper nouns or words from specialist fields, so I think it’s misleading to say studying more kanji is counterproductive. Maybe you’re saying on a frequency basis it’s diminishing returns? But I’d still say it’s not counterproductive. 🙂↔️

@houancao @sonu11421 @usa_hobby01 Kanji are fundamentally Chinese for sure, but they have meaningfully diverged over time in some interesting ways. Some characters were simplified into new forms 新字体 that don’t exist in Chinese, and likewise there are uniquely Japanese characters 国字.
