Statement 24 September 2026 SANEF Backs IEC Pledge Enforcing Electoral Code Protections for Journalists Sanef warmly welcomes the strong statement made by the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) Chairperson Mosotho Moepya about the crucial duty of all political party leaders and their supporters to ensure and actively facilitate unhindered election- related reporting by all media in South Africa. He stressed yesterday at the formal signing of the Electoral Code of Conduct by all parties in Midrand that an unhindered, independent media was a foundational pillar of a free and fair election. To ensure that our citizens receive accurate and meaningful information, Article 8 of the Electoral Code of Conduct explicitly sets out the strict relationship between political parties, candidates, and the news media. Under Article 8, every registered party and candidate bears explicit duties: a) Respecting the Media: They must respect the indispensable role of the media before, during, and after the conduct of these elections. b) Guaranteeing Access: They may not prevent access by members of the media to public political meetings, marches, demonstrations, and rallies. c) Ensuring Journalist Safety: They must take all reasonable steps to ensure that journalists are not subjected to harassment, intimidation, hazard, threat, or physical assault by any of their representatives or supporters. SANEF welcomes the return of ICIJ journalist Micah Reddy after his four-day detention by the Djibouti security establishment. While the Djibouti authorities claim that he did not have the proper accreditation, SANEF decries the fact that he was detained for days for an accreditation-related issue.

Statement 21 September 2026 SANEF Council condemns the disappearance of Micah Reddy, raises concerns over media freedom, journalists' safety and access to information ahead of the Local Government Elections The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) held its Council meeting on 19 September 2026 and discussed a range of critical issues affecting journalism, media freedom, and access to information ahead of the Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026. SANEF is concerned at the failure of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to incorporate key recommendations submitted during our consultations on the Electoral Code of Conduct. SANEF is disappointed that the final Code does not explicitly recognise a range of journalism concerns, such as the safety of journalists and media freedom, as essential components of the country’s electoral system. The omission means that political parties, independent candidates, and their supporters are not specifically required under the Electoral Code to respect and protect journalists from intimidation, harassment, threats, and cyberbullying during election campaigns, especially in light of the growing evidence of attacks on journalists, particularly women journalists, who continue to face targeted abuse and harassment online.
