Four entries appeared. Same company. Same month. Once a year. Lucas remembered none of them. Then he noticed a fifth. September 18, 2027. Already accepted.
Lucas stopped walking. Last year? “Do we close his file?” “No.” “Why?” “Last time he remembered the elevator.” Another pause. “Bring him back next year.” Lucas opened his calendar and searched one word: interview.
After his job interview, Lucas asked HR for a copy of his notes. They sent the audio recording instead. He listened on the train home. At first, it was just the interview. Then he heard the door close after he left. A man said: “He didn’t recognize any of us.”
Mara smiled. “Delete it.” “You’re the newer claimant. Only the older profile can approve a correction.” She pointed at TEST. “That isn’t a person.” “I know.” The government had made a copy of Mara 47 minutes before it made Mara official. Legally, that made Mara the copy.
A records officer opened the archive. Two entries appeared. Same name. Birthday. ID number. Original paper file. One marked TEST. One marked LIVE. The test copy came first. It should have been erased. A recent consolidation had pulled it into the live registry.
Mara reported her identity stolen. Two hours later, the government informed her that she was the thief. “There are two profiles with your identity,” the clerk said. “Then delete the other one.” “I can’t.” He showed her the screen. The other profile was older by 47 minutes.
@Bennieeexyz “We know you’re not” is somehow worse than getting the name wrong.
@HamskyHbb The deleted message is worse than the warning.
