The #Ebola response in DRC continues to intensify. With support from @WHO and partners, the Ebola treatment centre in Isiro, Haut-Uélé Province, has been expanded to accommodate more patients, enabling essential health services to continue at Isiro General Referral Hospital. WHO has also delivered an additional tonne of medical supplies to support the response.

Today at #WHS2026, I had an insightful discussion with EU partners on regional health collaboration. The EU brings scientific and regulatory expertise, financing and experience of cooperation between countries. Combined with WHO’s presence across the African Region and close work with governments, these strengths can help build stronger health systems and improve preparedness and response to health emergencies. For these partnerships to deliver lasting results, they must be guided by African priorities and strengthen national institutions. That is how we advance African health sovereignty and strengthen health security for both regions.

Had good discussion with Prof Axel Pries, President of the @WorldHealthSmt, in Berlin today on strengthening our partnership to advance African leadership in global health. African countries must have a stronger voice in shaping global health priorities and decisions. Our WHS Regional Meeting in Nairobi this April laid important groundwork for this work.

African institutions and communities should help shape the recommendations of the WHS–Lancet Commission on Academic Responsibility. African experience must shape the knowledge and decisions that affect our health. Today at #WHS2026, I joined a panel discussion at the launch of the Commission, which will consider how academia can contribute to the public good and build trust in science. Research capacity is part of health sovereignty. Universities should use their independence and expertise in the service of society, generating evidence that helps countries make informed health decisions and hold policies to scrutiny.

At #WHS2026, I made the case for equitable Africa-Europe partnerships that strengthen countries’ ability to determine their priorities and deliver on them, grounded in mutual accountability and respect for African leadership. Moving from reaction to resilience requires sustained investment in national institutions that can recognize health threats early, respond effectively and protect everyday health care.

In Ituri 🇨🇩, funeral rites play a central role in community life, but some practices can pose a risk of #Ebola transmission. People who have died or are suspected of having died from Ebola are buried following safe and dignified burial (SDB) procedures. In areas affected by the outbreak, trained community members carry out SDBs, which help prevent the spread of Ebola. Read more: afro.who.int/countries/demo…

Polio eradication is achievable, but it requires an emergency mindset, not business as usual. Good discussions with the #Polio Oversight Board in Berlin today, reinforcing the need to accelerate action & strengthen accountability at all levels. Outbreak closures in 5 African countries this year show what strong campaigns, surveillance + political commitment can deliver. Yet funding constraints are already weakening response & surveillance in high-risk countries. Protecting the 2027 outbreak response budget and strengthening routine immunization are essential to sustain progress & finish the job.

Across Africa, close to 150 million people live with mental health, neurological or substance use conditions, yet many still cannot access the care and support they need. For too long, people directly affected by these conditions have been invited to share their experiences but excluded from the decisions that follow. Listening must lead to participation. On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, I urge Member States to establish formal and sustained mechanisms for lived experience participation.

Important progress is being made in the #Ebola response in DRC 🇨🇩. In Isiro, the #Ebola Treatment Centre has expanded to 50 beds with @WHO support, in collaboration with @MSF, strengthening patient care while allowing Isiro General Referral Hospital to progressively resume its regular activities. Twenty-five Ebola survivors, including 13 women and 12 men, have been discharged after treatment. In Haut-Uélé Province, frontline health workers are receiving the ERVEBO vaccine under the government-led programme. The vaccine is proven to protect against the Ebola virus (Zaire species), while its effectiveness against Bundibugyo virus disease, the cause of this outbreak, is still being studied. WHO has also delivered over one tonne of medical supplies to Isiro General Referral Hospital, including oxygen supplies, gloves and masks for health workers, and beds and mattresses. While there are encouraging signs of progress, the response must continue to scale up to reach affected communities and stay ahead of further spread. Health worker dedication, strong national leadership, community engagement and sustained partnerships remain critical to bringing this outbreak under control. WHO remains committed to supporting the DRC government and partners to bring this outbreak under control, while strengthening health services to better protect communities from future outbreaks.

This #WorldSightDay, I urge Member States and partners to accelerate implementation of #SPECS2030, a WHO initiative to expand access to spectacles. We must also strengthen eye care through primary health care and invest in the workforce needed to reach underserved communities. #Ebola response in the DRC 🇨🇩: Safe and dignified burials help contain the spread of the virus. In Jina, Ituri Province, communities are actively involved in these burials, helping to strengthen acceptance of this essential public health measure. Each burial follows a strict protocol, allowing families to say goodbye to their loved ones with dignity while protecting relatives, communities and response teams from the risk of transmission.
