This calls into question the whole “closing the gap” idea and the entire premise that a “gap” in scores tells you anything meaningful about learning. For example, it two students with the same score can have completely different profiles of what they know and don’t know, then how do you know exactly what needs closing? Even if you break it down and say ‘this student scored low on this unit, so they repeat that unit’, you haven’t really diagnosed anything. Two students can fail the same unit for opposite reasons Also these data suggest that how we measure effective teaching is misleading. Being a “good teacher” isn’t really one thing: a teacher who is great at getting kids to master fractions may be average at word problems, and vice versa. nber.org/reporter/2026n…

NEW: We visited PS 307, the failing public school that Nikole Hannah-Jones sent her daughter to. The teachers make an average of over $100,000 a year. The school spends $52,000 per student each year. The student/teacher ratio is 9 to 1. We went to another school just down the street that spends less than half of what PS 307 does—yet the academic outcomes are significantly better. Everyone needs to remember this very important irony of the @nhannahjones story: Her daughter is not extremely bright. It's hard to say this in a way that doesn't sound rude. I'm not saying she's stupid or unintelligent. But really bright kids go through the same experience her daughter did and come out the other side with solid skills. NHJ's daughter is undoubtedly of slightly above average intelligence, but that's considerably less than is average for a child of a NYT writer. Her daughter is clearly hardworking, analytical, and ambitious. She rejected her mother's values. She demanded more. BUT if NHJ had put her daughter in a "better" school (read higher average student ability) her daughter would have gotten lower grades. NHJ would have then complained about the racist practices of the better schools. Racial integration of schools AUTOMATICALLY leads to lower grades for the lower achieving students, and the achievement gap being what it is, black kids will get the lower grades. The whole push behind emphasizing grades over scores and using grades instead of scores is *because* majority black high schools can produce kids like NHJ's daughter who have good grades and look, on paper, indistinguishable from kids with much better abilities. Colleges *rely* on "segregated" (read majority black/majority hispanic) schools. So do NYC high schools. Ironically, if her daughter had gotten lower grades she never would have been accepted at the good high school.
