What if we could treat the brain circuits involved in depression without surgery? That's the question driving the work of Jan Kubanek, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at @WashU (@WashUmedicine) and recipient of the 2026 One Mind Harvey Schwartz Rising Star Award. Nearly 300 million people worldwide live with depression, and roughly one-third don't respond to available treatments. Dr. Kubanek is working to change that. His research uses noninvasive focused ultrasound to precisely reach the brain circuits involved in depression, targeting specific regions without surgery. Depression isn't just "feeling sad." For many people, it's losing the ability to look forward to anything at all, even things they know they'll enjoy. Known as anticipatory anhedonia, this loss of anticipation is common in major depression and schizophrenia, and it's strongly linked to treatment resistance, disability, and suicide risk. Yet science still can't fully explain why it happens or how to treat it.
