“Who Moved My Cheese?” should be on the mandatory reading shelf in every firehouse.

@JoeBanner13 How about pass the ball when they think you’ll run it. And then pass the ball when they think you’ll pass it. Then when you have a comfortable lead, run the ball so the stats will look like you had a balanced or run heavy game plan.

There are legit reasons to circumvent the chain-of-command. But they are rare. Chiefs need to learn to ask “have you discussed this with your Senior FF? Your LT? Captain? BC? Chiefs need to figure out why the individual came directly to him.

In your opinion; What is the purpose of an “Open Door Policy?” I don’t think it’s intended an open invitation for all members of the FD to stroll over to the Chiefs office uninvited to talk about whatever is happening in the firehouse.

A Fire Chief’s “Open Door Policy” shouldn’t be where a junior firefighter goes to develop a personal relationship with the Chief.

It should be reserved for circumstances I which the line officers have a conflict or have failed to address a major issue. Harassment, hostile work… things like that.

The problems on your FD are not unique. Someone, somewhere has been there. It’s up to you to interact with other FFs to learn how they succeeded or failed when they dealt with a similar issue. Seek Help & Experience. You’re not an expert. Learn from others.

@FirehouseTrain1 If we spent as much time training on the basics of firefighting as we do on FF rescue … we’d all be all-stars.

@Kiel_Samsing Great post: Some of these books should be on the promo list. Or at least tequired reading as part of probationary promotion.

@FireMedic40NJ @scolemanjr Lt. Walsh may have thought you look sloppy working without a tie. He may have accused you of not taking pride in your job. After all, it’s not that difficult to button up your shirt and throw a tie on. I guess he just held himself to a higher standard.

@FireMedic40NJ @scolemanjr Do you wear a tie on medic calls?

@FireMedic40NJ Looking like a slob is never ok. But somewhere we started acting like this wasn’t a hands on, dirty job. Put on a collar to work a full arrest in a bathroom? Or to carry someone downstairs? $70 511 Polos do nothing but look nice to people not having an emergency.

Your peers don’t care what books you’ve read or what letters are after your name. Just be a competent, dependable member of the team.

Firehouse etiquette dictates that if the NFL home team is playing, that’s what’s going to be on in the TV Room. Also true for MLB / NBA/ NHL playoffs. Netflix, Hulu or trendy cult classic can wait. We get it: you’re eccentric & smarter than the rest of us…now beat it

@NEO_Scan When you only staff the bare minimum, the citizens receive the bare minimum quality on a daily basis. Now mix in something outside the norm… a storm, active shooter or a large fire and PREDICTABLE systemic failures ensue.
